Sony confirms PlayStation Network hacked

Sony says it pulled the plug causing the PlayStation Network downtime in response to an external intrusion on the system. It remains unclear when service will be restored.

In a post late Friday to the PlayStation blog, Sony senior director, corporate communications and social media, Patrick Seybold issued the following update concerning the ongoing PlayStation Network outage:

An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.

Though it provides little information on when PS3 owners might see online services restored, the language hints at the potential severity of the situation. Both the PlayStation Network and Qriocity have been compromised to such a degree that Sony felt it had no alternative but to pull the plug. With both systems containing significant amounts of customer personal and credit card data, the implication that at some point that information may not have been secure gives some cause for concern.

As we reported, in an earlier response to the situation, Seybold wrote that the system could be down for 'a day or two' while the company investigated the situation and effected repairs. While not untruthful, that statement came after the April 20 time given today as the time when Sony turned off the systems. Given the sensitivity of the situation it's understandable that Sony would want to be careful in what information it released; however, should customer data be involved, the company will need to act quickly to share the nature of the exposure with those affected.

When PSN first went down many presumed the hacker group Anonymous might be resuming its denial of service attack. For its part, though, Anonymous claims it has nothing to do with this round of trouble. A post on the group's blog states, "While it could be the case that other Anons have acted by themselves, AnonOps was not related to this incident and does not take responsibility for whatever has happened."

Regardless the source, the customer service challenge for Sony continues to mount as players eager to play Portal 2, SOCOM 4, or any of their other PS3 games online become frustrated. Many of them around the Net have started to suggest compensation is now in order in the form of a free game or access to the Plus features of the PlayStation Network.

Shacknews will continue to watch the situation and update you with any new information when it becomes available.

For NetFlix, try logging in and getting to the maintenance message, then back out. When NetFlix gets to its homepage and pops up another login screen, try logging in again to get to the maintenance message, then back out. After the second time you back out of the maintenance message, the login message should cease appearing. Then enjoy your streaming video!

If we infer that they took this big huge service down themselves after they were cracked, it makes me wonder what kind of deep shit this is.

Penetration bad enough to take down a major service like this for several days, to me, says I should be looking into getting a new credit card and billing address, email addresses... the works. That shit is scary.

I love XBL and hate PSN, and you make no sense. If MS went rabid after Hotz in the same manner, anon may have done exactly the same thing. I don't think it has to do with the service as much as getting people enraged. Unless of course Sony had blatant security gaps that allowed access to user info, which would then make them awful.

The old saying, "It only takes one to ruin it for the whole class." Regardless of who is doing this the fact that a person or persons has taken it upon themselves to act as digital vigilantes against an in justice that only they perceive is an act of true stupidity and self-serving machismo that only hurts the users in the end run.

Sure this is a PR nightmare for SONY and while XBOX Live has been down for extended periods at a time (has everyone forgot the HALO and CoD Launches from 2008?) nothing of this severity has ben reached. So what are the consequences that we can glean from this as end-users: Our personal financial data may have been leaked opening us up to other issues, those of us who use the PS3 for gaming (and I did have Ubuntu on the PS3 so I am not without sympathy) and entertainment are now forced to use other means, we can not redeem codes or download items we have already purchased, and we also no longer have the ability to play with our friends online.

How does this hurt SONY? They will be forced to comp people a game or free Plus service for a month or two but since PSN is subsidized by other revenue streams (ie Home, etc) I doubt it will be a big difference.

To end my rant, I will again state that the actions of a person or persons who are, by the letter of the law, raging against the machine and what they feel are a testament to the immaturity of gamers that the mainstream media paints on us. The actions of one should not reflect the feelings of many. You have a choice, have always had a choice. If you don't like the service or the system use the XBOX Live service and let the rest of us game in peace.

Will Sony be forced to do anything? For the most part, no, not really. It'll merely be in their best interest to do so in order to keep from further alienating their userbase. In the least, though, I'd hope they tack on an extension equal or greater to the downtime onto all applicable PSN Plus subscriber accounts.

This! My favorite feature is the automatic downloads while your PS3 is turned off. So you don't have to wait for a patch to download before you play a game, though you do have to wait for the installer still but that takes no time at all.

            April 23, 2011 10:54 AM

I think it autoinstalls stuff for you overnight, too. I've downloaded a bunch of crap before but was all like "no way am I sitting through those installs", and a day or two later I power back on the PS3 and everything is already installed for me. I love it.

that + free games + qore + additional discounts. Really pays for itself quite quickly.

The only thing I'd be interested are the games. Qore doesn't impress me. Also, if people are going to bitch about Live then they should bitch about paying for the download/install feature.

Well there's a ton of free games and heavy discounts for you. There's always a free Mini or two, free PS1 games cycle around fairly frequently (over a month they wound up giving away the entire Spyro trilogy to PSN+ subscribers), and sometimes there's even free PSN games (Stacking, Sam & Max Season 3) or DLC (Killzone 3). Plus the bonus hefty discounts.

Qore isn't something I'd pay for, but I enjoy getting it as part of the bundle and check out one or two things in it each month.

There is a big difference in paying for auto-updates and paying to be able to play online. You don't need auto-updates and Plus to enjoy the PS3, while you pretty much have to pay for Live if you want to enjoy the 360. I suppose there is a few people who don't care about online multiplayer, but that is pretty rare these days especially people who are on the shack etc.

And theres a big difference in the features and experience. If it's worth it to you then you pay. Would I like Live to be free? Yes, but if it meant a lesser service then no. There is also a big cost difference between running a network for multiplayer and adding a local feature.

Remember when XBOX live went down for 11 days in 2008. It was so bad they had to give a free game Undertow.

        http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/01/xbox-live-outage-day-11-up-and-running-except-not/

Services go down all the time, Giantbomb has been down since Wednesday as well. People need to take a breath and play a game offline for once.

It's not about cynicism, it's about practicality.

I love games, and I'm not willing to trade the price of an entire game for being able to play online and watch Netflix.

It went down for a while when Modern Warfare came out, but it's rarely been completely down. Even during the problems with MW other users could still log in. It doesn't happen every Xmas, so I'd say you are wrong.

Listen, you are saying it went down when Modern Warfare 2 came out (November 9th), which it didn't. What's been documented is that it went down for 11 days starting on Christmas.

Xbox Live always has had stability problems on Christmas because millions of people are loading up new account on that day. Which is understandable.

If you really aren't getting this maybe you should get your mom or dad to help you with this. No one said it was down from November 9th to December 25th. You made that crazy jump yourself.

For every angry customer there are 4 corporate apologists.

It isnt my fault Sony's servers were compromised and it has nothing to do with me what they did to piss off hackers, all I know is I payed for this system to be online (if you think it's free you're an idiot).

Every PS3 customer has a right to be angry, stop defending a corporation that really has half-assed this generation of consoles (PSN and PSN plus pale in comparison to Xbox live) and has be hostile to their users.

I'm sure the xbox isnt perfect but I've regularly seen Microsoft make up for its failings in console gaming (red ring of death, xbox downtime, etc) and I am seriously considering buying an xbox or Wii now.

That being a downloadable extension it was probably ripped apart and used maliciously... A sincere question and please stop me where I'm wrong...

recently we were bound to accept the new EULA for PSN (about a month ago, April 1st to be more specific) ... and since the outage happened i actually rechecked the EULA file and was interested in section 15:

      15. WARRANTY DISCLAIMER AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
No warranty is given about the quality, functionality, availability or performance of Sony Online Services, or any content or service offered on or through Sony Online Services. All services and content are provided “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE” with all faults. SCEA does not warrant that the service and content will be uninterrupted, error-free or without delays. In addition to the limitations of liability in Sections 1, 2, 11 and 13 of this Agreement, SCEA expressly disclaims any implied warranty of merchantability, warranty of fitness for a particular purpose and warranty of non-infringement. SCEA assumes no liability for any inability to purchase, access, download or use any content, data or service
Just in case you didn’t read it before!

which started to make me wonder, maybe they just wanted to rebuild the database regardless if they are being hacked/attacked or not, maybe now they are bound with adjustments and tweeks from Qriocity (a couple of devs and workers at SCEA where fired not long ago)

Thoughts anyone? (i hope someone proves me wrong, because this is the cheapest trick in the book, besides the fact the no one is taking pledge for the attack, and we all know that hackers usually do with pride )
