Portal 2 invaded by TF2 hats

Hat collectors, rejoice! Six of Team Fortress 2's hats have been added to Portal 2 for all who own them. Hat haters, hiss and boo!

27

In a characteristically hilarious blog post, Valve has revealed that six Team Fortress 2 hats have snuck into Portal 2's co-op mode.

Should you own any of the following hats in TF2, you'll now be able to wear them in Portal 2 too:

  • Mann Co. Cap

  • Prince Tavish's Crown

  • Pyro's Beanie

  • Fancy Fedora

  • Master's Yellow Belt

  • Tyrant's Helm

Portal 2, if you were unaware, has character customisation for the two co-op bots. Players can equip Atlas and P-Body with new gestures, paint patterns, accessories, and, of course, hats. Some can be unlocked with achievements, while many more are sold through the Robot Enrichment program--essentially a Portal 2 version of TF2's Mann Co. Store.

Angry, reactive and foolish corners of the Internet, this is your cue to proclaim that hats have ruined Portal 2.

And honestly, do read Valve's blog post. Cracking stuff.

okay okay okay. I know, I know, more hats, another store. But, doesn't that mean Valve has longer term plans for the co-op mode then? It'd be weird to spend all that effort if they weren't.

If muppets paying through the nose for virtu-items that I never have to see means Valve has both extra funding for and more of a reason to release many more co-op levels in future (hopefully along with some single-player Advanced and Challenge chambers), I don't see how anyone could have a problem with that.

Even if they release more maps, it's not the kind of game that has the same replayability as TF2. It's very weird that they expect people to spend money on cosmetic accessories for a game they'll probably be done with the first time they beat it.

Well, yeah I agree it would be weird... but that's why I think it'll be more maps and even maybe more gamemodes.

Don't you get a whiff of TF2-ness? Like they're trying to make another thing to keep adding stuff to? It does make me wonder how long it'll be till there's a L4D2/3 store.

This has been said a thousand times before, but valve doesnt catch as much shit for a few reasons:

        1) they constantly provide quality, FREE content for their games. EA does not.

        2) Valve hasn't charged for anything that is core to gameplay. its all purely cosmetic. EA charges for everything from trainers to maps.

I think the "hat store" is dumb as shit. i never see myself dropping a penny in the store. Its fine because I dont HAVE to spend money to enjoy every aspect of the game. they arent trying to gouge us, they are just selling stupid shit to make the game more customizable.

because valve keeps it fun/gaming oriented. it's clean simple disposable fun and consumers recognize the difference.

it's not the SAME and needs a "pass" and it's not shrouded in hypocrisy. it's different.

so? the simple fun/gaming stuff is all around you. do you have a smartphone by chance? back on the PC, have you heard of league of legends or world of tanks? hmm.

assuming it's lumped in with EA style bigger DLC oriented releases is incorrect. the environment is more of a constant microtransaction system now, across all platforms.

we are way past horse armor, but you didn't get the memo. if you are waving flags at microtransactions your arms will fall off.

There's an exception to the items not affecting gameplay with the TF2 hats required for a set bonus, they weren't craftable at first, and now that they are they require more metal than almost anything else. The spy fez in particular is quite powerful.

Just proves that you have to have a really good track record before people will trust you or cut you slack.

Case in point - Blockbuster. They were slow on the uptake but right now they have a by-mail service like Netflix, an online streaming service like Netflix, and a kiosk-based service like Redbox. And I think you may be able to have a monthly subscription to all three.

So since they've got all three aspects of what people are looking for, why aren't they mopping the floor with the competition? Simple - nobody fucking likes them. Decades of being screwed with late fees and having to wait in lines or driving out to the store only to see that the movie you want is not available and the minimum wage jerkoff kid being of no help whatsoever has really not endured anyone to them. Sure, Netflix and Redbox have first mover advantage but that can be overcome.

Quite the contrary, Blockbuster is acknowledging them in their advertising. They're bragging about how they have movies ahead of Netflix and Redbox (which as I understand it is going away anyway). When you're on top you don't even acknowledge that there is competition. Pepsi makes fun of Coke in their ads, Coke doesn't even acknowledge that Pepsi even exists.

It's not hypocrisy, it's a statement on their track record.

EA sells things that affect gameplay, usually pretty drastically.

Valve sells cosmetic items. They are not necessary. They don't have an affect on anything except appearance. The exception is the weapons in TF2, which are marginal upgrades anyway, and can be found through other means, or traded for.

        So what you're saying is,

If this were done by a publisher that constantly charges for DLC, people would be up in arms. But since it's a developer that frequently releases free stuff, they get a pass.

How is this hypocrisy? I couldn't care less about a fucking hat store, but I'm certainly not start seeing Valve in the same way I see EA just because they have one. They'd have to, at least, release half a dozen paid TF2 DLC that alters gameplay (maps, weapons) plus a new title every 6 months for me to consider them in the same category as EA.
