In a trailer released yesterday for the upcoming Mortal Kombat revival, team members from developer NetherRealm Studios outlined a few new online-specific features coming to the franchise.

In "King of the Hill," up to eight users enter a match with--what appears to be--winner stays, loser goes rules. Though this feature has become an expected addition for online fighters, Mortal Kombat put its own cheeky spin on the idea. While waiting for your turn, users can spectate each match and take control of an adorable on-screen Avatar.

Xbox 360 users can use their own Avatars, while PS3 users will have access to Puzzle Kombat-style MK characters. As blood and fiss fly, players can cheer, boo, throw things at the screen and more. The game also allows players to rate player performance after each bout. It's a quirky, interactive layer to a feature that usually means you can't play the game for a number of minutes.

The video below goes into more detail and even teases a slew of hidden content that can be discovered as you watch your online friends attempt to brutally murder each other.

And since we're here, here's the latest trailer for Mortal Kombat. This time, NetherRealm Studios features the story of Shang Tsung. Mortal Kombat launches April 19 for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

That's a pretty neat idea actually.

I'm not an MK fan, and haven't played much of any game after MK3. Still, it's refreshing to see a dev put in some creative and purely "for fun" features in a game. Also, the wacky Test Your Luck modifiers like headless/armless match.

this is the shit im talking about.. great innovation. So far by the looks of it.. it really does give off a native feeling of Mk1, 2 & 3.

KotH looks awesome, but wait a tick. When reptile turned invisible you could still see a silhouette of him. Which makes the invisible feature useless! What happened to 100% invisiable from MK2 and 3?

Autoplaying 2 vids at once? Classy.
