Rumor: Nintendo dropping Wii price to $150

An anonymous source has claimed that the Wii will go on sale for $150 on May 15, only weeks before E3.

Nintendo may be looking to spur on sales of its little white motion-controlled console, according to Engadget. A "trusted source" claims the Wii will drop to $150 starting on May 15, a full $50 off the current hardware price.

The Wii hasn't been the wunderkind it once was, and has been partially attributed to Nintendo's declining profits. The DS has been in decline as well, but more understandably with the 3DS preparing to launch. The Wii doesn't have a known successor, so a price drop might be enough to spur hesitant shoppers.

May 15 is only a few weeks before E3, and a price drop seems like just the type of announcement that would fit into its stage presentation. But then again, a price drop could nicely lay the groundwork for the announcement of Nintendo's next console. Take this rumor with a grain of salt for now, but you might want to hold off on spending that $200 on a Wii just to be on the safe side.

Clearly it's that $50 that is holding me back from buying a Wii.

I think that $50 might be far more important to the market the Wii was originally trying to penetrate.

I have generally defended the Wii in the past, but agree completely. I can't think of anything outside of new Zelda coming out that I'm generally interested in. Come the fuck on Nintendo.

Well, it's a good thing you don't have like over a decade's worth of precedent to go on.

This has been the case ever since the SNES. Why would you expect anything different?

I have about 3x as many games for the N64 as I do for the Wii and even more GC. This is a decent game drought for Nintendo unlike any other.

I played the shit out of Gamecube and 64, probably my favorite consoles of their generation - the Wii is dead last in this generation from my point of view.

lol 10 decent games on the SNES? Yeah right. You could almost add a zero to that number.

He said, "since the SNES," as in precluding the SNES but including N64, GC, Wii.

Agree about N64, the technical limitations of cartridges was clearly holding the system back, not to say there weren't some great games. PSX was clearly the better system. GC was better than N64, but PS2 was that generation's champion.

Wii might be the first ever console to kill the others in sales yet be viewed as lacking in good games.

Come on man, the SNES is the greatest system ever. 10 decent games on the SNES? lol

What? The N64 and Gamecube both had a ton of good games. The Wii is Nintendo's only system(barring the VC) that has really had this problem, and it's mainly because of the weak hardware and unconventional control scheme making cross-platform ports impossible.

That's just not true. The N64 had gaming droughts that were just plain absurd. That said, I loved it and didn't even own a PSOne.

Nah, N64 and GC had pretty shitty selection as well. The NES and SNES were the only consoles of theirs that've had really big libraries of awesome titles.

This is crazy talk. N64 had a bunch of great games and GameCube had some absolute classics- Windwaker, Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, Smash Bros Melee, Pikman 1 and 2, Super Monkey Ball, and Ikaruga make it more than worth it.

BTW, in no way do I mean to justify the Wii. This is my least favorite Nintendo console of all time. I think it is a shame that they've let the quality of licensed software drop so low. And viewing even the newest games on my high def plasma makes me cringe at the low fi.

At least they had a few really good games last winter, but yeah, there's nothing coming out soon that interests me except the new Zelda, whenever that is.

I lost interest quickly in the Wii because of the comparatively bad graphics and things like Zelda's horribly tacked-on way of 'swing'ing your sword.

          Hopefully Zelda:SS's method won't suck.

      Dear Nintendo,

If you want to make the Wii be a total market dominator, all you have to do is get the price point down to where you can put this in every 7-Eleven store. This would open up the possible scenario:

Husband: "Honey, I'm going to go fill-up the car, and pick-up a Wii while I'm there."
Wife: "Oh, okay. Be sure to get some milk too."
      Husband: "Sure."

At some point they need the revenue of game sales, because even if every household has a Wii, they can't keep selling them more Wii bundles with nothing to play.
