Darkspore second open beta begins

A second, longer Darkspore open beta has kicked off and will run until shortly before the the sci-fi action-RPG's launch this month.

Following a four-day open beta test via Steam at the end of March, publisher EA has launched a longer open beta for the squad-based action-RPG Darkspore.

The open beta will let you play through 12 maps and 15 character levels, messing with the Spore tech-powered character customisation. The similarities end there, though, as Darkspore is a squad-based, sci-fi, action-RPG with co-op and PvP.

While the first open beta required Steam, this does not. You can download the 5.49GB client from the official site or via Steam. There have also been a hefty number of fixes and changes since the last beta, as detailed in the monster patch notes.

This second beta will run until April 22, while the full version of Darkspore is due to be released for PC on April 26.

Is there still no way to trade between your party or at least change a loot rule so you can decide who gets what when it drops? That was the biggest problem I saw, there was no way to specialize a certain role within a party because if a nice piece of loot dropped for the Hero you liked to play, it would just randomly give it to someone in your group, so the guy who wanted to be the tank couldn't reliably level up and improve his tank Hero, the guy who wanted to be the healer couldn't upgrade his healer Hero, etc.

Play the same levels you played in the closed beta!

Only you start at level 0!

Damn bro, it only took me like 1 level to realize how incredibly vapid it was.

Can anyone confirm if this has the same nasty DRM as Spore?

The Steam page says "PERSISTENT INTERNET CONNECTION": http://store.steampowered.com/app/99890/

So perhaps the DRM will be less like Spore, and more like Command & Conquer 4. Keep in mind that C&C4 gave people problems, and Jeff Green, who was working for EA at the time, tweeted, "We need better answers" after dealing with DRM-related disconnects.

Wont be purchasing based on the beta. Was fun to start out but I don't like how they handled loot, "levels" or the 100 dudes you have to juggle.
