by Steve Gibson, May 29, 2000 6:58am PDTSo here is my plan. It looks like the latest drivers from 3dfx are pulling the V5-5500 quite a bit closer in performance to the GeForce2 numbers. Also, I feel that a large majority of readers here would probably overclock their videocards to squeeze out more performance. Soooo.... this next week I'm going to run the benchmarks again with the GeForceDDR/2 and V5 cards overclocked, using the very latest drivers, and also push the 950mhz system up to 1050mhz. I'm also pondering throwing some Win2K GeForce2 numbers in there since performance under Win2K is actually 2-5% faster. In addition to that, we've gotten some price/performance charts figured out for you guys who have been asking for those charts. Hooray for holidays. Gonna go pick up a copy of Daikatana today I guess. Eidos promised me a copy but I lack patience. You guys see those LOTR pics? Hope the movie doesnt suck.

Being 15, having no job or a car and wanting this badass game this bad is just insane. SoF sucked too much to satisfy my craving for a good, slightly different, fun, and replayable single player game, and it looks like MDK2 has that. I can imagine playing Dr. Hawkins 4 or 5 times through just to see all the weapon combos. Max f*cking rules and Kurt is your basic dude with the l33t parachute.
I think I'm gonna play the demo for the 4th time over. That intro was pretty damn cool as well.

Its a cool preview (in Quicktime format). This series is gonna kick ass - Peter Jackson is the f'n man!
I see one small mention of it in all the replies.
And you people call yourself geeks.

The first episode sucked, ended up rocket jumping onto that last platform (thanks for the hint...) and finishing the level. The Greece level is much better, no crashes. And like I said, the more you use the sword...
The game is more appealing now. The demo DOES NOT speak for the game. Although those tiny spiders suck ass, they're much better than killer frogs. It still hasn't made me it's bitch though.

I REALLY, REALLY hope that Duke4 has Co-op play in it. I'm VERY much looking forward to neverwinter, which is essentially a really advanced form of co-op play, with one player acting as the GM.
It would be especially cool for games to ship with special co-op levels in it that are designed around a team of people accomplishing the goals. Can you imagine if Halo did something like that, with their SP game?

My problem with DK was that first episode. I really can't imagine playing through too many BSPs of that CRAP!! However the later episodes in the demo showed some potential.
Questions:
Does the first episode get substantially better than the first level in the demo? I really don't know if I can stomach a whole episode like that.
Hows the level design? Does it get better? Are all the textures in the first episode as piss poor as they were in that first level?
How good is the AI? Granted, if Raven can't match HL AI with SoF than I can't imagine a dev cycle as screwed DKs could either, but is it up to snuff for a FPS?
I really don't care to hear about the sidekicks, I've heard enough about them, and from the demo it seems I can handle them sufficiently.
Thanks!

Personally I only played the demo, and despite some problems crashing I thought it was ok...not good enough to make me buy it, but it had its moments.
The thing I found funny as hell is what's written on the Daikatana box:
"Game of 1999, PC Accelerator"
Not only did it not come out in 1999, but I sure would like to know which issue they got this quote from :)
And the sad thing is, PCXL went belly up, so there's no rebuttal...

Not only was it fun... it was a LOT of fun. I love the doom-style secrets, and the fast paced play. The sidekicks were NOT a pain in the butt for me. There were only a couple of times when they had trouble following me, but for the most part, they worked like strategy game combat units with really good path-finding. There were a number of times when I used them to cover my ass in case progressing further released nasties behind me and that tactic worked really well. Also, people who rag on the puzzles are on crack. A few of the ones that stood out for me were pretty much the same type of puzzles as were found in the first part of the underground complex in half-life. But, I guess they must suck if they are in Daikatana, eh? One of the most hillarious that I encounted was only hard if you ignore all the tricks that you learned playing DM. Rocket jumping is a wonderful thing.
The greek levels look fantastic. Perhaps it's a matter of what video card you are using or something, but I can't really see the tiling that all the reviewers are bitching about in their screenshots. I'm playing at 1024x768 with all visuals at max on a PII-400/256MB/TNT2Ultra machine and have not experienced any slowdowns.

You going to use only officially released drivers in this test? If not, then perhaps you should reconsider using the leaked 5.22 beta drivers, which actually result in a hit in performance....
Perhaps, since I've heard that NVIDIA is close to another beta version, the better approach would be to just use the fastest drivers for each card, since that is what folks tend to do anyway, regardless of beta status or official release.
