Final Fantasy V revamped for PS3 and PSP
by Alice O'Connor, Apr 04, 2011 2:00pm PDTSquare Enix announced today that a revamped version of classic JRPG Final Fantasy V is in development for PlayStation 3 and PSP, headed for a downloadable release via the PlayStation Network.
"All-new CG cinematic sequences exclusive to the PSN edition" are promised, but Square Enix offered very few details beyond that. One imagines the publisher would have mentioned if Final Fantasy IV was being revamped with new graphics, like the April 19-due Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection compilation.
The PSN edition's price and release date have not been revealed. Final Fantasy V was originally released on SNES back in 1992.
Square Enix had been looking at making a Nintendo DS versions of FFV and FFVI, but "technical issues" have left them placed on hold.

It's weird that they won't sink some real money into doing a full on remake of VII. There's obviously a hell of a market for it, but as long as stuff like Final Fantasy XIII sells millions, there's not a huge incentive for them to reassign the manpower required away from new games. People were pretty positive about the previews of Versus XIII, so I'm looking forward to seeing how that one turns out (especially compared to XIII).
A full on PS3/360 remake of VII would be a nice thing to have for the 15th anniversary of the game's release. Hell, I didn't even care for the game, but I'd probably buy that.
