Darkspore beta on Steam

An exclusive beta for Darkspore opened on Steam today. From now until Friday you can play both co-op and PvP.

A week-long beta for Darkspore opened today for PC gamers exclusively on Steam (download the Steam client here if you need it). The beta will run through noon pacific time this Friday, April 1. During that time you'll be able to play both co-op with up to four players against computer-controlled Darkspore and 1v1 or 2v2 player vs player competitively.

The email announcing the beta also confirmed Tuesday, April 26 as the Darkspore release date. Though that doesn't allow much time before the release, the developers say they plan to use what there is to "fine-tune the game, incorporating fan input, so that the game is just right when unleashed."

[UPDATE] If you plan on getting the game, you might consider teaming up with some friends. We also got an email from Valve Press with word that as a pre-purchase special a four-pack of Darkspore can be had for the price of three.

I'm downloading this now and I'm excited to try it out. I really liked a lot about Spore, but I felt (like everyone else) that it needed a lot more of a game in it. I'm hoping this might be it!

So how are you downloading this?

It shows up in my Steam library as already installed, but with only 34 MB of local files, and no option to play or install the game (only a "purchase" option).

I went to the store page and clicked the "Play the Beta Now! Click here to install" button. It was like a 6 gig download.

I'm a little more hopeful for this after having a lot of fun with the Sims Medieval this weekend. The idea of putting tighter boundaries on sandbox games doesn't always work out but it looks like EA could have a firm grasp of it.

I don't know; EA seems hellbent on forcing all of their games to require an EA.com login. Judging from the EULA posted on the Steampowered website, Darkspore will have similar "persistently connecting" DRM to what was in Command & Conquer 4.

That doesn't completely rule out using steamworks on top of that though. It is curious that this beta is done through Steam.

That's true, but I don't anticipate EA releasing a game with only Steamworks DRM on the Steam version, as much as I'd want that.

The EULA is probably a placeholder that they use for all EA stuff, it may not be indicative of the final products t & c's.

Also, this game has been attracting some fairly negative opinion before and during the beta, so EA may be trying to use Steam to get this game more exposure while they work on it. EA is very anti-Steam in general, so I suspect this is an act of desperation more than anything else. I'd like to believe it was the start of EA not being dicks about Steam and taking advantage of it properly, but big corps are better at being stupid and inflexible than Getting It Right...

Really during the work week? Would love if they'd extend this through the weekend. Fucking bummer.

Good write up. I just played a couple hours too. Really solid. Also, the matchmaking worked flawlessly. Really polished, really easy. The action was definitely more fun with 4 player coop, people swapping classes on the fly to compliment the rest of the group's characters.
