A teasing peek at the future of EVE Online

A glorious new vision for the future of EVE Online and DUST 514 has been unveiled, though don't go counting CCP's chickens just yet.

22

EVE Online developer CCP Games revealed its vision for the EVE universe's future during the annual Fanfest event with a stylish cinematic trailer.

The concept video hints at complex interaction between EVE and the upcoming console FPS DUST 514, with EVE players bombarding soldiers on the surface of a planet. It's been known all along that DUST would connect with EVE but initial examples given were simple interactions, such as EVE players contracting DUST players to secure resources for them to use in the MMORPG.

While the video may use in-game assets, it is still only a vision, not a blueprint. What you see here may not reflect features that ultimately make it into the games, and certainly doesn't imply you'll see any of it soon. We've still yet to receive the 'walking in stations' update Incarna, which CCP first announced at the 2006 Fanfest. It's not expected to arrive until this summer at the earliest, and even then only in a very limited form.

Plus, of course, EVE always manages to look far more action-packed in trailers than it is in (virtual) reality.

Not all plans revealed were quite so vague, though, as CCP also unveiled new ship turret models and animations and new nebulae that'll be coming to EVE.

I doubt CCP would include station PVP unless it was consensual. Also I hope they aren't counting on players from both games having to support each other for tasks to be completed.(Raid style events that are known to require players of both games sure, but hopefully not all cases.

This too. I really enjoy EVE, but the trailers make it look like a whole other game.

PVP has never been consensual in EVE, i don't know why it would be in Incarna. That isn't to say that there won't be huge penalties like in current high sec space, but it will still be possible.

Well ok, in terms of High Sec, you will be Concorded pretty quick in space if you try to PVP without consent(not talking stealing a can, firing on the other guy as you doing so gives consent). In a station, they can handle that as well but from what I've seen there is no "HitPoint" being presented to characters in stations, meaning there is no way to PVP since you can't fire(need a weapon first) on something that doesn't have a point of death.

In lowsec it's not consensual sure, but I highly doubt anyone not belonging to the corp/alliance would be allowed to dock and enter the common areas without some serious restrictions/getting overwhelmed before they have a chance to blink.

I think you have nullsec and lowsec confused. There are npc stations all over lowsec, and corp/alliances can't control who comes and goes. Only in nullsec where they erect their own stations does this happen. And don't tell me about bubbling as again, that is a nullsec only tool. You can't bubble camp in lowsec.

Again, no hitpoints = no PVP in stations. Plus while there certainly are NPC stations in lowsec, first, why would you dock at one if your corp owned a POS if you also knew you could be killed in station in an NPC station. 2, why would said NPC station not have their own security to stop unruly guests. 3 if you don't own a POS then you'd just stay in your ship in the dockyard. If you left, that means you are consenting to being possibly attacked.

That trailer did feature "consensual" station PVP.

The man on board the station flagged himself as a bad guy when he betrayed his mercs. That made him fair game for the lady.

This is also how the new smuggling system is going to work. If you are moving pills and you are scanned down you can be flagged and players can freely kill you.

^ This was the most exciting change for me... sounds like something I would have fun doing. (scanning and flagging people, not smuggling)

I wish they would fix the bounty system to go with this. One idea I heard was to destroy an isk value worth of assets of the player before collecting the bounty.

Destroy 200m isk to receive a 100m isk bounty would be a ton of fun.

      Turret animations,
they look nice, but seriously, you don't play the game zoomed in gawping at your ship...not if you want to live!
CCP need to sell this game with truer representations of the actual gameplay, or (preferably) focus on improving the antiquated UI so that it is more visually appealing and functional. THAT's what player interact with every day, not this pretty Internet spaceships that Eve videos are dominated with.

Thats why I never got into it. The first time I played I was thinking it was something like a Freelancer MMO - "Ok how do I fly around?" "Do I need a joystick?" "Then after finally finishing the tutorial missions with this tutorial bot it dawned on me.

Seriously, if they made it so you could fly the small ships with a joystick, mouse (freelancer), or gamepad, it would be fucking awesome scale. Give the logistic birds eye stuff to the cruisers and up.. I could see a Homeworld combined with Freespace MMO where people get assigned to cruisers and such doing pretty well..

I assume its very difficult to seperate between the whole strategical/tactical and skill based gameplay, unfortunately.

I always really liked the feel, look, and direction of EVE (minus the whole devs manipulating the community thing). It's sad that never translated in game. Love reading about it and listening to it, but I'd never play it (and I have tried).

It would be the greatest mmo ever made if space combat was more along the lines of freelancer or freespace 2.

I agree. As it stands the game just eventually becomes a bunch of dots on a screen. If it was more about closer-range combat and interaction I'd be more engaged.

thats actually a player/design problem. Each side tries to outdo the other on who can shoot further. The lack of damage at those ranges is negated by the sheer numbers of people on each side. If you can shoot further than the other team, you win because their damage doesn't hit you, or what does is minimal. However, it has to be guns because fighting from those ranges in missiles is pretty much a flying flag of "this thing is heading towards you, but since you are aligned out, they won't arrive before you have left the field".

I almost loaded up my latest Freelancer save yesterday. This is like the 6th time I've finished the campaign, but I've never 100%'d the Wrecks. This time, I got all the wrecks in the "Campaign Areas" while I was doing missions in those areas (when they send you out to earn money for a while, I'd hit the wrecks). So I still have Sector Omega wrecks and such to hit. But I am in my Hammerhead.

With the current combat mechanics there is no point to allowing joystick control. You are just going to do the same thing that the game currently does and orbit the other player and shoot.

They would have to gut the entire combat engine and start over to make joystick control make sense. If you fly in pvp you find out there is plenty to do that isn't controlling your ship.

On top of that, it would add a whole new mess of complexity to combat trajectory calculations that would make blob warfare even more horrific with lag.

And without all the retarded skill bullshit. Or did "training" skills and then having to wait while you contributed nothing to the actual training of said skill go away?

Yeah, those skills have vanished, and all points put into them have been refunded to players. I'll have quite a few to distribute whenever I resub.

Not necessarily I more or less want a combination of the two. Eve has an awesome world/economy but the combat is boring. Black Prophecy has pretty cool combat but will likely never be very deep in terms of the world and what you can do with it.
