Its amazing how much further ahead valve are than pretty much anyone else in the entire industry these days. Design, writing, artwork, gameplay mechanics, pacing, sound design, music, advertising, character design.

In terms of artwork I'd put them almost at #1 (primarily because of their excellent integration of comic, blog and game to tell a cohesive story). Blizzard is right up there with them.

For everything else they're at the top end, but they're matched up against other great companies like Blizzard, Bethesda and Bungie. All of them are fantastic.

I really like Bethesda's games, but in a few of the categories he mentions they are closer to the bottom than the top.

yeah, I agree with this - Bethesda makes some great games, but they do a pretty bad job in a lot of individual categories

their games tend to be a lot more than the sum of their parts imo

Arena.net (Guild Wars 2 dev) stands near the top of the industry in artwork in my opinion.

Blizzard games have a generic epicness to them. This applies to music, artwork, dialogue, and story.

Agreed. I'm playing through Crysis 2 right and am groaning through every story segment of the game.

I think it's more just the fact that they really understand their audience and fan base.

I'd love to see a little MP demo like the one they did for TF2. I haven't been looking forward to a game this much in a long time.
