Report: Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City revealed in new OXM

The new issue of OXM reveals Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, a squad-based shooter in development at Slant Six Games...

According to the site StickSkills, the new issue of the Official Xbox Magazine (OXM) includes details about a new squad-based Resident Evil title in the works by Slant Six Games, the developers behind SOCOM: Confrontation. (via Joystiq) The OXM issue in question isn't officially supposed to hit newsstands until April 5, StickSkills apparently snagged a copy from an outlet with a propensity for selling new issues before the street date. In other words, the details should be reliable, but haven't officially been confirmed at this time. Called Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, the game reportedly focuses on a team of four Umbrella Corp. special forces troops (Vector, Beltway, Bertha, and Spectre) who are sent in to "destroy all evidence of the ongoing outbreak" in Raccoon City, following the events of Resident Evil 2. This also means that in addition to dispatching the expected zombies (which can track players via sight, sound, and smell), players will also have to wipe out survivors of the outbreak as well. After all, witnesses can be problematic.

OXM reveals Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City

Two other factions besides Umbrella Corp. Special Forces - US Spec Ops and bio-organic weapon monsters - create a "three-corner conflict" in the game. Based on the report, it would seem that players may also have the option to play as the US Spec Ops team, with the objective of protecting Leon Kennedy. The report also notes that the player's role within the squad will depend on which squad member they choose to play, which seems to indicate specialized roles for each member. It's also claimed that Operation Raccoon City will enable players to "change the history of Resident Evil," in that characters from the first couple of games can be met, and even killed. Specificities aside, StickSkills lifted a quote from the OXM piece that seems to sum things up nicely: "This is not a one-versus-one game where you've got one clip full of ammo and zombies on you. If you've ever thought of those times in an RE game when you thought, 'I'd wish I had a big gun', that's what this game is. It's not fair to give people big guns, then take all the ammo away." Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is slated for release "this winter" on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

I'm skeptical as Slant Six didn't actually make the greatest of entrances to the console world with Socom Confrontation, game was just a mess.

This concept has always been something I wanted to see for and RE spin-off (Capcom had the right idea with Outbreak, but the execution was horrible).

I'm hoping they can redeem themselves with this

It sounds very cool, but it also sounds like they are taking a page from the Left 4 Dead gameplay book. Not to say it's a bad thing, but I don't want a clone, I want a Resident Evil game. More than likely, this game will probably have the look and play style of RE5, but with 4 players.

Although the later Resident Evil titles have become action based, I'm all for cooperative gameplay. I'm more addicted to Co-op games then a drug addict who's about to hit rock bottom.

All I gotta say is: As long as the guns are varied, rather then a copy of the next weapon, then I'm happy.

Unless of course you get 2 guns and you have to cherish it with your Umbrella corporate lives.

I just hope that with RE6 they will go back to their roots, shitty camera angles and all. But this looks pretty cool. Going back to Raccoon City in current gen graphics will be awesome. I hope its a little more survival horror than re5.

Reading this, I'm reminded of the Outbreak games for some reason. Good idea on paper, but the original execution was far from spectacular. Considering how far they've come in the series and the resources they probably have available now, I'm actually very interested in seeing where this goes.
