Gothic 4 expansion delayed indefinitely 'due to legal uncertainty'

ArcaniA: Gothic 4's standalone expansion Fall of Setarrif, due to launch this week, might never be released, following legal confusion.

The standalone ArcaniA: Gothic 4 expansion Fall of Setarrif will not launch this week, as was planned, having been delayed indefinitely due to unusual reason of "legal uncertainty" at publisher JoWooD.

The company said in a press release that the expansion's "legal background" is "unclear" and that "diverse legal positions with the BVT fund that financed the main game are present." As such, Fall of Setarrif has been placed on hold and delayed indefinitely.

"It's uncertain whether the game can be released onto the market in its current form," said JoWooD business development manager Stefan Berger. "Of course this must be investigated and settled before the release - unfortunately."

JoWooD has been plagued with financial trouble as of late, and filed for bankruptcy in January. The publisher has still soldiered on, though, launching standalone shooter expansion Painkiller - Redemption and a revamped Steam release of Gothic 3 through its subsidiary DreamCatcher Games since then.

Gothic 4 and its expansion were developed by Spellbound Entertainment, after series creator Piranha Bytes moved on to make Risen. A sequel, Risen 2: Dark Waters, was unveiled in February.

Cool, hmm I am not sure what to say, I am a mega Gothic 3 fan with the community patch, I was hoping for a Gothic 3 style game in 4 its different.

Its not Gothic 3 thats for sure, you have to go in thinking its just a good RPG, just don't think of Gothic 3,or 2, more Risen than anything else.

Ah Risen, love that game, really looking forward to 2 as well, Gothic 4 may be more like Risen more than anything else so I think you will like it since your a fan, it really does feel a lot like it.

Just be warned the big towns will have performance issues if you are playing maxed out(graphics are really nice), I really wish they would fix that then I would praise the game more. The spell trees are a little small but its still good, not like Gothic 3 it has way more skills/spells.

Risen was my first experience with "Gothic-like" gameplay. I really enjoyed it. Picked up Gothic 1-3 yesterday, I think I'm going to try starting with Gothic 1.

Maybe the world should rejoice? I heard it was shit.

Having said that, I'm sad because what I want more than anything right now is a good, solid open world/sandbox RPG to rival oblivion, including modability. I'm hoping 38 studios game fits that bill, but I have my doubts :(

Wait, you heard the expansion was shit, or Gothic 4?

Personally, this was one of my favorite games in the past year. I was looking forward to the expansion, but now I is sad...

Yes, I enjoyed it. Voice acting blew (other than the main character's voice), and some of the NPC animations were generic, but I had a great time with this title.
