Kinect hacked to be PS3 controller

Kinect can now be used as a PlayStation 3 controller, thanks to an unofficial hack for Microsoft's motion-sensing Xbox 360 peripheral.

Microsoft's motion-sensing Kinect controller for Xbox 360 can now be used unofficially as a rudimentary PlayStation controller, thanks to a new hack released over the weekend by programmer Shantanu Goel (via PSGroove).

The 'Kinect-PS3' hack processes Kinect input on a PC running Linux then transmits it to a PlayStation 3 via Bluetooth, requiring neither an Xbox 360 nor modifications to the PS3. If you're tech-savvy, you can download and give it a go yourself.

Goel describes Kinect-PS3 as "a proof of concept" that's "pre-alpha quality software currently" and still in need of further development. However, he's released a video demonstrating using Kinect to navigate the PlayStation 3 XMB and play a little Killzone 3.

Microsoft plans to launch an official Kinect SDK for Windows this spring. Sony is bringing its own motion-sensing controller, PlayStation Move, to PC with a toolkit named Move.Me, though curiously this will need to be run through a PS3.

MS is prolly laughing their asses off at this and thinking up headlines along the lines of "MS Takes Control of PS3!" or "PS3 Finally Gets Kinected!". If it sells a few more of their little toys, I'm sure they are down with that too. They make a healthy profit on every one sold so PC, Xbox, PS3, Sega Saturn, it's all good.

LOL, perhaps Sony but not MS, they even give away their XNA for free so people can make games for the 360 at home (with the $99/year developer license).

        Why would they fight sales?

A combination of the kinect and the wii-mote/move would be pretty interesting.

Granted I'd still prefer to see the wii-mote / move integrated into a set of fingertip gloves --- specifically thumb, index, and middle fingers. You could do pointing, rotation, expand/contract.

While this isn't the same, the number one reason I am interested in a PS3 jailbreak, is if someone is able to get an Xbox 360 controller working on the PS3.

In the mean time, this is still pretty cool/interesting.
