Nintendo 3DS unboxed

The Nintendo 3DS arrives at the Shack and we immediately crack open the box to see what's inside and grab some quick snaps.

Nintendo just dropped off a shiny new 3DS here at Shack headquarters. I know a lot of you are looking forward to getting your own later this month (March 27 in North America, March 25 in Europe) and cracking the box open. Here's a quick look at what you'll find waiting inside: Of course, there's the 3DS and its charging cradle. Mine came in Cosmo Black:

Nintendo 3DS next to its cradle

And then there's the Quick Start Guide, Operations Manual, Street Pass Mii Plaza booklet, and the AR Games AR cards:

Pretty much what you might expect. Snap shots from the unboxing of the Nintendo 3DS that just arrived at Shack HQ.

        Garnett, please advise:

Was your first impression of the 3D effect:

        A) Wow, this works and is awesome!
        B) Wow, this is not as cool as I expected.
        C) Wow, this hurts my eyes.
        D) I am indifferent to this 3D effect and I will play with it off.

After playing a round or two of Super Street Fighter, definitely B. But I haven't played all the games yet.

That is exactly what my wife said when she messed around with one on display. But I know someone that imported one and I thought Pilotwings was really, really cool-looking. So I dunno.

Looks great, but why didn't they really comment on anything? Or boot it up and do any playtests?

well not yet, I just opened it!

It's charging. Soon as I can I'll have some more. One thing, it feels nice finally holding the damn thing without a tether and anchor point on the back of it.

Haha gotcha. And if you could, do some tests with regular DS games. They're saying it's slow to boot them... If it is, maybe they'll fix it with software updates.

Actually you might want to tether it to your desk before it walks away.

Does it feel heavy? Does it also feel exactly how the regular DS controls feel?

Man... I can't wait for mine! I finally got to see the 3D in action at PAX East and it was even more impressive than I first thought it might be. The 27th is too far away.

Yeah, I was messing around with Street Figher IV and the 3D is really nice. It's just cool to see 3d without glasses.

        ^ This...

I tried the 3DS first time at PAX and wasn't expecting much... after trying out a demo of DOA I really really really want one right now...

I tried one in a shop and the 3D was completely unremarkable. From a tech point it's amazing but I can't help but feel that 3D isn't actually better in anyway than 2D - just different. Certainly not worth paying extra for.

What's the deal with the charging cradle? What's the point?
Can you still plug in the charger directly to to 3DS?

As far as I know, yes, you can still plug it straight in the 3DS. Nintendo decided to throw it in, since you'll be charging it A LOT.

fishing a cable in a hole is a lot harder than just placing the device on a dock like that one

I bought Pokemon White ahead of time and didn't preorder any of the actual 3DS games, read through the booklet of Pokemon though and saw it has co-op modes. The 27th is way too far away, and my Gamestop only has a 9am opening event.

I tried one at Best Buy the other day and really didn't like the 3D. It worked okay, but after 2-3 minutes of flying around in pilot wings it made my eyes feel weird and I started getting a weird headache. One of the guys who worked there said the same thing happened to him.

More like IN the screen. Its more 'you can reach in and see the world inside' more than 'oh shit its poping out to mah face'

I'm not sure why people want "popping out of the screen" 3d, it always looks terrible to me. I'd rather have more depth "inside" the world.

I agree. Depth is always better than pop. Like in a shooter (Especially a lot nowadays that don't exactly have the best color palette) I like to be able to gage the distance that my enemies are before I shoot. Otherwise, the closer ones might get on top of you and take you over.

The AR cards have Nintendo mascots on them. What does that mean? Does the character have anything to do with content on the card?
