Torchlight XBLA leads to highest Runic sales day

Runic Games announced today that the Xbox Live Arcade launch of Torchlight resulted in the best sales day for the game so far.

Torchlight has seen unprecedented success on Xbox Live Arcade, according to developer Runic Games. The company announced today that the Xbox 360 launch resulted in the best sales day for the game so far.

The game launched last week as one of the tent poles of Microsoft's "House Party" promotion, so the exposure had to have helped. Still, it's an impressive feat given the number of times Steam has hosted discounts on the game.

"We're very excited to bring Torchlight to the 360, and have really been gratified by the positive reaction," said Runic president Travis Baldree in the announcement. "It's affirming to know that console players love this genre as much as we do. We think the experience translates pretty well to the couch."

Torchlight probably also plays nicely from the safety of the couch. Its a very casual game that can also be played hardcore, so thumbs up for Runic. Lets just hope one day they don't forget where it kicked off for Torchlight.

I'm sure that won't happen. They're developing TL2 for PC first and foremost.

Yup, they've said TL2 is a PC game first, but only wanted to make sure they could easily console-ize it if they needed to based on the TL1 XBLA port.

I know, I saw it last year at the GC. Still we all know that many devs studios got high headed (?) and forgot where they came from.

"Still we all know that many devs studios got high headed (?) and forgot where they came from."

Thats not fair to say. Especially if your referring to consoles vs pc, or doing console versions in addition to pc versions. We all have our favorite platforms for various reasons, however keep in mind that the gaming industry is a business. And it can be a brutal one. It's not easy to keep your head afloat with so many factors constantly in play. Especially for the smaller studios. For the most part console versions of games do outsell pc versions. Thats just a fact. Doesn't make them better or worse, it's all subjective in the end, but that is a fact.

If you honestly expect any developer to just ignore the potential additional success, and financial gains they could achieve by also developing for consoles, then your not really being supportive of that developer. I don't understand why anybody that is truly a fan of a studio wouldn't wish them the best in growing the company and doing they best they can for the employees. Making games is hard. Much harder and time consuming that people know.

I don't know what line of work your in, but just imagine you could potentially double or triple your companies profit, and thus potentially putting more money in your pocket personally if you catered to an additional audience in some way. And then how would you feel if people called you a sellout for doing so?

'well you know it's just on consoles but it's still the games you love' - cause we all love games and it doesn't matter what platform they're on if you're having fun.

These are also the kinds of words that were used to explain the situation with Deus Ex Invisible War.

I get it, our developer homies gotta eat, so they gotta develop for consoles. I don't think the situation is as cut and dry as that but okay fine, lets accept that premise. But so do I, have to clothe and feed myself. Which means my gaming time and money is limited. So I have a choice, buy the games I don't like for a platform I don't prefer (or just decide I like shitty games like the console focused old guys around here have), or be disappointed in the developers who used to make the games I like and then play some other game instead of giving them my money and time.

Both these things are fair, mate.

Making an extra profit maybe on a different platform, that is not what I meant. What I meant was companies completely ignoring their roots and just looking at maximum profit for their shareholder value.

Same here, have it on steam but this game would really shine on a couch with a gamepad and a big screen tv.

That's cool, maybe now they can afford to make a game that's less monotonous and uses sound effects I haven't heard a million times in Diablo 2

I liked the controls for the XBLA version, especially for the barbarian. Text is harder to read from the couch though.

If I had one complaint it would be the text, that and the inventory and character screens take some deciphering at first.

I think it actually controls better with the 360 controller .... it's nice to use the sticks to move around rather than click, click, clicking. The menu navigation may be better with mouse and keyboard, but it still works well on the 360.

Odds of Diablo 3 ending up on consoles just went up. If there is any Blizzard game that would work on a console with a few tweaks, it's that one.

totally, if torchlight can work than Diablo 3 can work since its basically the same game.

Torchlight is great, glad they are seeing such success. Interested to see how Torchlight 2 is received

Personally, I like Torchlight on Xbox better. I like how you can layout your skills to the trigger buttons and switch skill sets on the fly. Nothing against the PC version obviously, I'm just more familiar with console controls and to this day find myself fumbling at the keyboard. In addition my pc is showing its age and doesn't run Torchlight as quickly as I would like it to.
