Story Of The Daikatana

by Steve Gibson, May 27, 2000 2:09am PDT

GameSpot has an entirely lengthy article for your weekend entitled Knee Deep in a Dream- The Story of Daikatana. It's about as in depth as you can get looking at the lengthy development process that went behind getting Daikatana on the shelves. (As well as some bio on The Romero before his forming Ion Storm) Unlike most Daikatana articles this one appears to give a good honest look at the company so you can make your own judgements.

Romero thought his dream would be realized when he founded Ion Storm. But sometimes the path to realizing a fantasy can be long and winding, filled with friends, foes, and fallacies.

  • My comments... (gotta convince myself my opinion counts)

doom - whoever said the GAMEPLAY is still the best - wrong.
but it still is *THE* game for that "feeling" when you 1'st play it, anyone who missed out on that back in Dec 6 years ago, I truely pity you.

sound - totally agreed - quake 1 that ambient wind / whatever it is on the start map - it's just mad (and i hate quake) - the nailgun had BALLS - everything just had beef shake the house kinda tunes in q1 - quite nice (same with doom2)

daikatana - thus far "ok" - beats q1 q2 and q3 for content and that i like, i cant stand games which are basically engines (id software after Q1) i loved h/l - i loved shogo (shit engine though, bad feel) - daikatana i will finish, nice and hard too

oh and as for these "daikatana gfx are dated" comments- can you people WAKE THE FUCK UP, i played it in 640x480x16bit on my tnt1 - 60fps easy and the 1'st level was lovely - the waterfalls and fog and all that kind of stuf - quite nice, just because it uses the q2 engine dosent mean diddly fucking squat, i'm quite sure on a geforce 2 with a phatter cpu (700+) this game would be fucking amazing to look at in 1280
dont just a game just cause you know it uses the q2 engine for fucks sake, if they said "we are making our own" and they released it as it is, right now you wouldnt bitch it's only cause you people know its the q2 engine.

  • Slightly OT:

Myself and two other friends just finished playing Daikatana co-op. I can safely say this is the worst FPS I have ever played (although I never played Mortyr). The first episode is just horrible, the 2nd is dull but not bad, same for the 3rd.

The 4th is boring too. The levels gave me a headache. Whoever designed those levels must have been on some good crack, I have never seen so many coloured lights in one room. But it looks like he saved the best for last.

The level with THE WORST DAMN JUMPING PUZZLES EVER!

It was so frustrating to do the jumps in co-op it wasn't even funny. That was so bad that I can't even begin to describe how much swearing was going on in the hour or so it took us to get past the level.

Oh, and the level after "The End"... Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh....

  • You know, I think the game will be fun once I make it past the mosquito and frog levels... these damn critters better not be in the next level or I am gonna take the CD and let my dog play with it, she loves frisbees... WTF was Romero smoking when he thought of mechanical frogs and hundreds of big annoying mosquitoes?

I went online with the game and people have already memorized the levels and learned how to camp on spawnsites.

And here's the craziest part about running the full game... it doesn't crash randomly like that hosed up demo. That demo wasn't worth it's weight in shit.

  • It was such a good post back at #63, just in case some developer types read these posts... im gonna say it again...

"One thing, imho, has been overlooked in games for too long. SOUND. Think back to the 'days of yore'. One of the things that made Doom so
great was the sound. Demons howling and moaning, babies crying, metal clanging and grinding, wind, ect. added significantly to the atmosphere
and 'terror'. SS2 did sound almost to perfection. These days, most games leave sound a low priority, and it shows.

Romero cant make me his bitch, but maybe he could take us back to hell.... Wouldnt mind that one bit."

    Gareth

btw- yeah im a little drunk...

  • I have a problem with the diakana demo (latest one) HALF THE ICONS DIDN'T show up it wouldn't install correctly on some systems HOW DO YOU LET THE DEMO TO YOUR DREAM GAMe come out and you not personal check this stuff. I mean did anyone at ION install the demo and see HEY this doesn't work right. I still think a big WTF is going on at ION. It seems to be gettting better, but anything ION says seems to come for some PR bullshit stance (oh everything is fine), (Edios will make the game unwarezable) damn companies need to cut the BS and be honest with the community. but still how the hell do you release a demo after 3 years of work and not make sure everythign works properly

  • More sad stories from llama-ville:

"WTF IS it with people always talking about old shit? It gets on my fucking nerves I swear. Listen god damnit, if you ever find yourself saying things like 'Things were better when...', then smack the shit out of yourself, youre getting fucking old. "

Uh, buddy, not everything old is better. But there isn't a single game out today that can match DOOM in the area of gameplay. And if you don't agree with this, you really are a dumbass. This is one of those times where it's not opinion, it's fact: DOOM owns Quake, it owns Unreal, it owns Half-Life, and it owns Daikatana.

"Out with the old, in with the new.
The old motherfuckers always think new stuff sucks. It doesn't though, its usually better. :P "

    DOOM's an exception.

"Not that Doom wasn't a great game, but it -is- like 9 years old."

6, and still has better gameplay than anything id Software, Epic Games, or Valve Software has EVER put out.
