The 8.9-magnitude earthquake that hit Japan on Friday, and its resulting tremors and tsunami, have resulted in a temporary shut down for the Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV servers.

The word came from Square Enix's Lodestone site over the weekend, announcing that the servers would be shut down due to Japanese power companies requesting energy conservation. It's currently planned for a week, starting from yesterday. Square's PlayOnline servers are also unavailable, including the Friends List, password recovery, and account cancellation.

The pair of natural disasters have impacted power production from nuclear plants, leaving large areas of Japan without power. If you'd like to contribute more directly to aid in Japan, you can donate to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

With more games becoming reliant on servers, this brings up the question that no publisher PR team wants to answer: what happens when the servers go down, or if customers can't connect?

Years ago, Valve had a similar situation when there were power problems in the Seattle area. There's also the possibility of tier 1 ISP peering wars, DNS hijacks, and so on.

Most of the games I prefer to play would work fine as long as I have a PC with power. My entire PS3 collection of 4 games are played offline; the PS3 only gets its ethernet cable plugged in for very specific updates.

I think this is an extreme case but in the event of that happening companies would have to put servers in multiple locations for failover purposes.

Power issues in Seattle keeping the main datacenter from functioning correctly? Failover to the Omaha, NE site because nothing happens there.

Back when it happened, Valve didn't have failover, they just had fail. They probably fixed that by now.

Don't remind me of that Steam outage. Those were dark days.

Japan is the world’s third strongest economy and was second until China over took it recently, the US being the first. This will have an effect on the rest of the world without a doubt and I wish the Japanese people the best especially today on March 14th their second valentine’s day per year.
