Weekend Confirmed Episode 51
by Garnett Lee, Mar 11, 2011 12:00pm PSTThough they're missing PAX East, the Weekend Confirmed crew can't complain about the amazing SoCal weather, and Shacknews's Xav de Matos is up in Boston to cover the show. EGM's Sterling McGarvey joins Jeff and Garnett in the studio for this week's show. There's still plenty of leftovers from last week's GDC along with new releases to fill Whatcha Been Playin? The highlights include Fight Night Champions, Dragon Age 2, Lord of the Rings: War in the North, and Alice: Madness Returns. GDC panels and your comments on apologizing for Bulletstorm get the Warning going strong. And news in the Front Page includes several game announcements, sales records for Kinect and Pokemon, and cloud save game backups for the PS3.

A game can be incredibly high quality, like a LIMBO or a Bayonetta, but these typically don't stand out quite as well amid the pack simply because word is not spread well enough for anticipation to hit critical mass. Likewise, Killzone was hyped to hell as a AAA release, but failed to deliver on the hype, so it failed to achieve AAA standing.

Kane and Lynch 2 - It had the marketing hype, but not the favorable fan/critic reception. Not considered an AAA release.
Bayonetta - It had the favorable reception, but not the requisite marketing hype. Not considered an AAA release.
Modern Warfare 2 - It DID have the favorable reception, after a HUGE amount of hype. Arguably the ultimate example of a AAA release.
As for the shift between pre-release hype and the realization of what the game really is, I don't find it much of a problem. I look at every game with an open mind, but as the game builds up to release, you can start to get a handle on just what it's going to be like. There are surprises here and there, like Batman Arkham Asylum, but for the most part, I think experienced gamers have developed a sense for what games are shaping up well, and what games aren't.
The neogaf thread you posted wasn't so much a reaction to the game's quality, so much as a reaction to the game's direction. Its a thread by a PC gamer who wanted the more PC-centric gameplay of the original, but got a more action-heavy slant instead. He's just railing against 'consolification' in general, and using DA2 as a scape-goat.
