The Nintendo 3DS eShop will bring back TurboGrafx-16 and Game Gear titles on its own Virtual Console, president Satoru Iwata announced this week at his GDC keynote. Though specific titles weren't mentioned, Sega claimed in a separate announcement that five of its Game Gear classics will come when the eShop launches in May.

This comes in addition to the Gameboy and Gameboy Color titles set for the service as previously announced, bringing the total number of systems represented to four. The Wii Virtual Console by comparison has built up eight consoles, and various arcade games. The TurboGrafx marks the first announced home console addition to the 3DS' Virtual Console.

Blazing Lazers, Bonk, et al would be pretty cool to have on the go.

What a strange twist of events to have another console's games on a Nintendo platform. Then again, there aren't any really new games much these days. May as well go back to the old ones. At least they were more original in their day.

I spent countless hours laying in bed playing my Game Gear plugged into the wall when I was supposed to be sleeping, I loved that thing

I wonder if they will ever join the 3DS shop and the Wii Virtual Console so that purchases on some system can be played on the other. I will assume never either due to technical limitations, licencing, or the desire to make people buy it twice for more money.

That last issue is always the toughest to get over.

Some one will pick up on that eventually and will create a good following based on that alone.

Such an odd choice of platforms to put gamegear and original gameboy titles on. Why not gameboy advance titles? There are a whole slew of awesome gba games that are impossible to find nowadays that i would love to play on a ds.

I'm sure GBA titles will make their way to 3DS eventually. In fact, I think discontinuing the GBA cartridge slot on DS models post-Lite and releasing GBA titles on the 3DS Virtual Console was Nintendo's long-term plan.

Agreed. If they're not going to make a new Mario Golf, at least let me play the old one.

Hmm, I wonder if they'll have the different background layers at different 3D depths for the emulated games. That'd be kinda cool.

Apparently they will have some titles that will be enhanced in exactly that way, yes. But it's not going to be on every emulated title, at least from what the interviews suggest.

And a Game Boy, and a Game Boy Color, and a DS, and probably a GBA at some point, plus a whole new library of games in addition to classics. In summary: it's awesome.

The GBC stuff alone is enough to peak my interest. I played Link's Awakening in GB greenscale...I'd love a chance to get DX and play it in color.

Wish they would include GBA games. I want to play Fire Emblem again.
