GDC: Bungie making action MMO [Update]

Bungie's David Aldridge jokes that his company's next game is an MMO and no one gets the gag...

[Update: March 6 @ 8:45am - XDM] Bungie has backtracked and says David Aldridge's comments were all a joke that no one understood. See the new post.

[Original Post - SW] Halo-creator Bungie's next game is a "massively multiplayer action game," according to lead network engineer David Aldridge. The statement came at a panel on network code at Game Developers Conference (via IGN), and confirmed long-standing rumors of an MMO in the works from the company.

Details were scant, but Aldridge did say the game won't be "WoW in space." The unnamed project will be published by Activision, in a deal that was struck last year. Paired with that announcement was word that the new game would come out for "all platforms." We later heard that Bungie was working on a new engine to support its next project.

I don't know. Possibly some sort of modern day setting revolving around a conflict or warfare or sorts?

Summary -- It's been long speculated, and this is merely the confirmation.
Now we must speculate if it's going to be modern combat or sci-fi.

If it is the often rumored MMO FPS, I guess it could work. Depends on the price point of it if I would fork over any money. Didn't really like any of the multiplayer Bungie has done to date, so it will be interesting to see what they bring to the table this time.

An Action MMO? They didn't say a FPS MMO so I'm slightly relieved. I love how much effort Bungie put into the Halo games so I suppose I should have more faith in them but if they don't come up with an idea that makes sense for consoles it won't work, there have already been a lot of failed console MMO's. An Action MMO sounds like it could work on a console if it played something like dragon age 2 but then again.

      This totally reminds me of:

Could Blizzard and Bungie be working on this together?? O.o This is complete speculation, and I'm guessing no, and this is just people drawing conclusions, but it makes you wonder doesn't it? ;)

Yeah. Some developer will eventually make this type of game work. May as well be Bungie. I hope they stick to a scifi setting.

I was at this talk. This is a total misquote. He intentionally left "multiplayer" out of his statement. It was a joke. He said "massively awesome action game"

I was there too, front row, video taped it, he is being misquoted. He didn't really say this.

        We absolutely update posts.

This situation doesn't call for a retraction, though. Bungie says the comments made and the note on the slide from which this news came from was a joke gone bad.

We have posted a new story with the new information. We felt that would be better as it will add a new post to chatty to make it clear that Bungie said the situation was a joke gone bad. Updating this would not create a chatty post.
