Sony announced a PlayStation Move software development kit for hobbyists and educational purposes, titled Move.Me. SCEA's developer support team senior engineer John McCutchan announced the SDK on the PlayStation Blog, in preparation for a presentation he'll be giving at the Game Developers Conference.

McCutchan says researchers expressed interest in the Move last year, leading to the development of Move.Me. It's an application that runs through the PlayStation 3 and sends the motion data to the PC, similar to the SDK used by Move developers. Sony is hoping the technology leads to "new, innovative interactive technology in fields like academia, healthcare" and to "inspire applications that we could never have imagined."

Last week, Microsoft announced it would be releasing a Kinect software development kit, requiring only the Kinect hardware and a Windows PC. With Move.Me, now two console motion controllers are giving official sanction to hobbyists. Nintendo, what's the hold-up?

My guess is that they are hoping this will generate some more buzz for Move as all the hacks for Kinect did. Plus, they know that MS is coming out with a similar SDK for the Kinect soon as well. Sounds cool to me.

Now imagine a program that uses Kinect and Move. That seems like the ultimate setup to me.

Requires a PS3 as a middle man? They may as well have not even bothered.

i disagree. aside from being motion control, move and kinect aren't quite the same, and they can both offer different strengths and weaknesses

Oh, absolutely. But requiring the PS3 rather than being able to use the Move device directly on the computer is pretty dumb.

i'm guessing there's difficulty in providing a windows API for PS3 devices, even if they use USB

That doesn't change that no one will use it because it requires $300 of additional hardware.

No one will use it at all, not even people who already have all that's required herp

Yes, but you can use a wiimote directly on a computer via bluetooth, and while the move does offer a bit more than the wiimote, it's not enough to make it worth all that.

This is the epitome of fail. They're wasting money if that's a hard requirement/limitation for using this SDK with other apps.

probably better that the wii isn't doing this, move is vastly more accurate and precise than wii
