GDC: New Super Mario game announced for 3DS

Surprising no one, Nintendo has announced a Super Mario game for the 3DS. Less expected, though, is the tail dangling from its logo.

A new Super Mario game for the 3DS was announced today by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata during his keynote speech at GDC 2011. Development is being handled by the team behind Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel. Iwata noted that the 3D display on the 3DS will help players better understand and navigate 3D spaces, letting developers create any world they could imagine. He also drew attention to the tail hanging from the game's placeholder logo, saying that it would be explained at E3. Could this be the return of Racoon Mario? There's no word yet on when the game will be released, nor even its name.

The first peek at Super Mario's 3DS outing.

          1) I'd rather have a new game.
          2) SMB3 gets too much love. It's good, but SMW is so much better in every way.

For the most part I agree, save the power ups.

Of course SMW was a polished and morphed design from SMB3. SMB3 gets love because it was/is one of the finest 8 bit games ever created.

Nah, SMW is good, but the control is too floaty. SMB3 just feels better.

I'm not saying SMW isn't also good, but there's no doubt SMB3 has tighter controls.

Maybe you prefer SMW, which is fine, but SMB3 is the game where I feel most in control of the character.

I disagree with #2. They're both amazing games that excel at different things.

That might be what it is, the environments look pretty linear in that screenshot. Maybe it just has some fancy camerawork to exploit the 3D.

definitely not. it's going to be full 3D to take advantage of the 3DS's capabilities. players will be much more spatially aware of mario's environments now that they can perceive them in three dimensions. nintendo has been waiting for this opportunity for a long time. i'm sure that's why their super mario galaxy team is being put on the project.

remember, the nintendo ds already had a 2.5D game with new super mario bros., and as much as i prefer new super mario bros. wii to super mario galaxy, i have to admit that it just wouldn't make sense for the next mario game not to take full advantage of the star feature of the 3DS.

That said, I'd also love a NSMB3D for the 3DS. It was good enough for Wario with the Virtualboy.

I think having 3d vision is a definite plus to 3d mario. I remember having trouble getting him going in the right direction in Galaxy.

Will these new games be playable on the DSLite? I don't want crazy 3D stuff and my DSLite is still in awesome condition at this point.

The 3DS is way more powerful than the DS, so no. Think like PS1 => PS2 difference.

The 3DS has a slider to disable or reduce the 3D effect. When I turned it off it looked like a regular 2d screen.

I remember playing Mario 64 and really having that weird feeling in my stomach looking over the edge of tall levels more than I had ever felt in 3d games up to that point. I look forward to doing that in stereoscopic 3d. Between this and Netflix streaming... I just got 100% more excited today for my pre-ordered 3DS.
