The Gunstringer confirmed for XBLA

Though we've known about Twisted Pixel's upcoming Kinect-exclusive title The Gunstringer for quite some time, it was never made clear how the game would be released...

Microsoft revealed that Twisted Pixel's first Kinect-enabled effort, The Gunstringer, will come to the Xbox Live Arcade and not to retail. The new detail on the motion-controlled title was announced in a blog post from Xbox Live's director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb.

The game is one of two titles the studio plans to bring to the masses during PAX East 2011, the other being the previously announced spin-off Ms. 'Splosion Man.

The Gunstringer follows a skeleton, marionette out for revenge in a colorful world, using Xbox 360's Kinect to control the action.

Other than a number of screenshots and a teaser trailer, little is known about the title; however, when it was first Twisted Pixel's Dan Teasdale [formerly of Harmonix] noted: "You can play it sitting down, which is great if you just want to play and relax rather than burn crazy calories. Most importantly, you can aim and move with precision not seen in any of the Kinect launch titles, and with a speed and feel that's just not possible with a traditional controller."

This looks interesting enough. Kinect on XBLA could be cool. I want the Indie devs to get their hands on this tech for the Xbox 360.

Seems to me that Kinect titles on XBLA are the way to go.

Makes sense as a "test" area. That way devs can see what works and what doesn't without the huge overhead costs of a full release game that flops.

I know there is no way I'm going to be able play this game but it looks like your hands would get really tired after a short time playing.

This likely has to do with the increase in image resolution that has recently come to the Kinect. If you look at the actual image sensors that the Kinect uses, they are 1.3mp. They downgraded the resolution in software due to the limitations of the Xbox's USB ports (it has to share bandwidth between all of it's USB ports). One way or another, they found a way around this in some capacity. You can now use 640x480, whereas before it was 320x240. Combine this with the ability for the camera to zoom, and you can zoom in on ones hands to track finger movements and generally have greater precision.

Interestingly enough, 640x480 still isn't 1.3mp, so it remains to be seen if the resolution could go even higher in software.

A shame the site refit didn't include an html5 video viewer for iPads. :(

I'm loving the art style--nice change of pace from so much realism. Can't wait!
