Kinect Official Windows SDK Coming in Spring
by Alice O'Connor, Feb 22, 2011 6:00am PSTThough programmers have been tinkering with Kinect on PC for months now, Windows support for Microsoft's motion-sensing Xbox 360 controller is soon to become official.
A non-commercial Kinect Windows software development kit (SDK), intended for academics and enthusiasts will launch in spring, Microsoft has announced. "The SDK will give users access to deep Kinect system information such as audio, system application-programming interfaces, and direct control of the Kinect sensor," MS said.
As Kinect "hacks" have already used the sensor for everything from making Minecraft sculptures to interactive shop windows and even controlling robots, it should be interesting to see what happens with official support and a lower barrier to entry.
A commercial SDK will follow "at a later date."

Face it without Microsoft there wouldn't really be any competition and we might not have seen the emergence of some great games. Without Microsoft everyone would still own a wii but Sony would be the real console choice and it probably wouldn't try innovating as hard, that would be bad for us. Thanks MS that's another step in the right direction, all gamers like more choice.
