Morning Discussion

I love the opening of a good story. The first lines can really set the mood of the work. Here are some examples (some famous, others not so much). Can you name them all without cheating? What are some of your favorite openings in literature?

1) "TRUE! nervous, very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why WILL you say that I am mad?"

2) "There is a similarity, if I may be permitted an excursion into tenuous metaphor, between the feel of a chilly breeze and the feel of a knife's blade, as either is laid across the back of the neck."

3) "It was love at first sight. The first time Yossarian saw the chaplain he fell madly in love with him."

4) "Tyler gets me a job as a waiter, after that Tyler's pushing a gun in my mouth saying, the first step to eternal life is you have to die."

5) "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel."

6) "Two tires fly. Two wail.
A bamboo grove, all chopped down
From it, warring songs.
