Rift Open Beta Starts, Tweet Screenshots In-Game

17
If you've been curious about the upcoming MMORPG Rift, play it this week. The open beta started today at 10am PST and runs through next Monday. That gives you the whole weekend to get in and check out the game's four character classes and dynamic encounters created by its namesake rifts. Brian took an extended look at Rift last October and found some things he liked on top of a familiar fantasy game. To get going, hit the Rift beta signup page.

If you do spend your weekend in Rift, you'll still be able to Tweet your exploits same as if you were out on the town. Built-in twitter functionality will allow players to update their status with a simple "/tweet" in chat. Screenshots can also be tweeted by using "/tweetpic". So just like that unfortunate 2am snap leaving the club, you can share the moment your group wiped on a late-night raid.

How would they influence the game world besides being in it?

in games like UO or SWG the people in the world almost decided everything. you had to be part of a society to exist or you would be ganked. also there were cities and houses owned by players. mmos today are built for casual gamers sadly :O(

too bad Wish Online got canned =( Constant world changing events and a "newspaper" you could buy every 4 hours with the players that had the most impact in the events.. one huge server, everything ran by GM's.. needless to say it never made it too release.

The homepage even had a section dedicated "Wish for UO players"

It was what UO2 should have been.

Have you guys played the beta? If you don't stop rifts they have consequences. Eventually enough footholds will be established they will try to take over the entire zone and all of your quest hubs 1 by 1. The rift invader npcs do that, all broken down into earth/water/fire/wind/death/life/guardian/defiant classifications that have their own agendas. Earlier tonight freemarch was being taken over by death invaders and there were guardian footholds springing up, one of them went up maybe 30 feet from a death foothold. So they were sending out invading parties right past each other, eventually they started attacking each others footholds. It was awesome to watch! It kind of reminded me of the promises the frontier would have in Age of Conan, where npcs actually did stuff not just stand around. Rift still has the npcs who just chill around doing there thing, but the rift invasions are really fluid and dynamic and add so much more to the game than public quests did in warhammer.

Nope, not in any significant way. I don't think that has ever been their intention though, it's just not that type of game.
