The "Mortal Kombat Rebirth" short film became a hit on the internet, and its popularity has led to a full web series. A press release sent out today by Warner Premiere, the digital and straight-to-DVD arm of Warner Bros., announced that the multi-episode series will begin this spring.

The original short film (above) featured Jeri Ryan (Star Trek Voyager) as Sonya Blade and Michael Jai White (The Dark Knight) as Jax. We had heard speculation that the web series wouldn't keep that level of talent, but the announcement today confirms that Ryan and White are on-board, along with Darren Shahlavi (300) as Kano.

The series is currently shooting in Vancouver with director Kevin Tancharoen at the helm. It was Tancharoen's pet project short film that led Warner Bros. to pick up the series, which is now being cross-promoted with the upcoming Mortal Kombat game.
