The savepoint system in Dead Space 2 is PISSING ME OFF. I now have to replay like 20 minutes because I didn't reach a new savepoint before I quit playing for bed last night. The fucking game does automatic temporary saves on a regular basis that get loaded if you die, so why the hell don't they just make those legit checkpoints? Why do I have to keep playing until I reach an arbitrarily placed "save box" on the wall?

Because it makes the game harder. Also on the hardest difficulty you can only save 3 times, so they need actual save points that you can choose from. I don't know why would complain about this, it's been a staple of survival horror for years. Checkpoints take much of the drama away from the game, if you know when you die you'll just go back to right before the fight, you won't care as much about staying alive. This isn't hard to understand...
