by Jeff Mattas, Feb 10, 2011 5:00pm PSTInspired by Garnett's recent (if late) discovery of CD Projekt's The Witcher (and The Witcher 2's approaching release), I decided to go back and restart Geralt's first adventure. It had been a while since I'd fired up the game, but it's been at the top of my "favorite games I haven't finished, yet" pile for a couple of years now.
While the game is starting to show its age a bit (especially when compared to more recent, similarly-structured games like Dragon Age), I'm still really impressed as to how well the experience holds up, roughly four years after release. Of course, The Witcher has received significant presentational updates since it first hit the shelves, but that doesn't change the fact that it's still the best looking game that uses the Aurora Engine, even including titles produced by BioWare. If you're an RPG fan that somehow missed it, The Witcher is a game you should go back and play. It's only $19.99 on Steam, at the moment. Well worth it.
In a world where the shelf-life of your average game seems to be diminishing, what are some of your favorite games that still hold up several years after release?

Anyone else having troubles with matchmaking taking ages to find a game?
So I used to host parties for this startup hipster company in Brooklyn, before moving to NH for DynDNS. I had a big loft that was too expensive so I'd rent it out to pay the bills. I don't want to name them - because I'm going to paste an email response I got from their CEO tonight, when I asked them if they were going to SXSW this year. They are a fairly annoying, "tastemaker," type of cultural brand ambassador effort that gets folks like MSTRKRFT and Girl Talk to play gigs for free. I was being friendly and inviting them to a party. Sounds like someone is a little butthurt...
Anyway, I seriously asked them if they were going to Austin this year for SXSW Interactive, and lol, what a response. I actually understand where he is coming from as a small guy that relies on sponsors to pay for everything, but holy shit, the VENOM!
And to cite COACHELLA as where it's at now? Jesus wtf.
Anyway, I figured someone might enjoy this.

I know this isn't exactly an earth-shattering games journalism expose. The shitty American box art thing has existed for a very long time. Everyone's seen that courageously atrocious cover Megaman was given for its release in the West, featuring a man getting to grips with his four ill-fitting prosthetic limbs while trying to take a massive poo, and that was back in the NES days. But my feeling is, if this is still an issue after 24 years, then obviously people like me haven't been harping on it enough. So here we go again. And make no mistake, it is a problem. Who knows how many people lost out on a great gaming experience because the first impression didn't immediately seize?

I think judging a game by its box art is a shallow mistake, but I agree; US game boxes are terrible.

I asked her if she ever installed the Find My iPhone app and she replies "What's that?"
She calls the restaurant and the lady says she'll look around and call her back. That was an hour ago and she hasn't called back. Busy thursday night, I guess... Aka, phone not there, lady doesn't care.
The phone sent 3KB of data at 2pm today but hasn't done anything else since her last outgoing text message. I am not seeing any of the calls or text messages show up on the AT&T activity, altho that can take awhile to show up. I hope it is just dead and someone hasn't wiped it.
What a bummer... Has anyone else dealt with this? Not only a missing phone but a wife that never listens? LOL

Just watched OSS 117 - Lost in Rio on Netflix Instant, and it was hilarious. It's a French comedy that spoofs the James Bond movies from the 60's/70's, and it was pretty well done. It features a bumbling, racist, sexist secret agent as he tracks down Nazis in Brazil.
There's even a scene where he fights a Nazi wrestler who's wearing a Luca Libre mask and a swastika armband.
Highly recommended!

Someone earlier mentioned rumors of Apple TV getting games, either local or some sort of on-live streaming type thing, or maybe just an onlive app. No guesses on if it will happen, but if it somehow turned into a game system, and had gamepads, could app make one that didn't suck.
Apple is no doubt fucking good at designing stuff, but I have my doubts that they could make a decent gamepad. They sure can't make a decent mouse.
What do you think? would they give up and actually let it have more than one button? would it be a brushed aluminum finger cramping wreck? would they come up with something totally original that blows our minds yet completely fails to function at controlling games?

I suck at this game. I just can't get the hang of it. The funny thing is, I have a long history of being good at competitive RTS games (SC1, SC2, CoH, WC3, C&C, etc etc.
Can someone suggest some good resources for me to look at / read / watch / listen to so that I might improve my game. Anything would be helpful.
