Battlefield 3 Leading on PC; Dedicated Servers Planned, Mod Tools on the Backburner
by Steve Watts, Feb 08, 2011 12:30pm PSTBattlefield 3 is being developed with a distinct PC focus, according to the GameInformer cover story (via Joystiq). Executive producer Patrick Bach says the team is "focusing on PC first, and then we fiddle with it to fit it onto consoles."
The game will support dedicated servers, and is sticking with four selectable classes (referred to as "the sweet spot"). Forming up into squads is also getting tweaked, but Bach is holding those details close to the vest for the time being.
Some fans might be disappointed to learn that mod tools are taking a back seat to polishing the main game for the time being. "We will not deliver mod tools in the way we delivered them for Battlefield 2," said Bach. "Creating mod tools today -- dumbing them down -- takes a lot of energy and what we are discussing more every day is, 'Where do we put our focus?'"
He continued, "Right now our focus is to create the best possible multiplayer, single-player, and co-op game -- the core game of Battlefield 3. We're still discussing how we handle modifications of any kind."
More Battlefield 3 information is planned for GDC 2011. A beta, which shipped with select copies of Medal of Honor, is also in the works but has yet to be dated.

For the love of god, please! Punkbuster and VAC are jokes, they catch no one except someone that forgot to remove their google hack and came back two years later. Anyone that has played any of these games has seen the questionable gameplay that a lot of people exhibit, it has become especially prevelant in BC2. Hell, when the community depends more on respected admins to ban players on their server then the software itself that's just stupid!
This isn't even taking into account all the players that look somewhat legit, but they operate awfully fishy... the ones that always know where everyone is and they're always prepared. The amount of hackers has seemingly went up a lot in the last few years and I'd blame it squarely on the douchebags from consolization.
Putting that aside BF2 wasn't really top of the game as far as how awesome a PC title could be when it came out (the menus were clunky, it was a resource hog, load times sucked, anti-cheat sucked, and it felt unpolished). It's sad we're just now aiming to maintain the status quo rather then improving on the past.
I do and full heartedly hope they work on mdo tools. Even when the devs forsake the game there is almost always a group of dedicated individuals releasing content for it.
It'd be nice to have more then 64 players too. Tribes 2 fluidly supported 64 players on dial up in 2000 when it came out and 128 players on lan. The current decrease in player pop is sad, status quo is still stupid though.

Google hacks work for the game and I'm not the type to just call someone a hacker because they killed me. There is a legitimately huge issues with hackers in BC2. It isn't as bad as BF2 was and that was bad (like the pilots flying around without the skyboxes so they could see other aircraft from across the map). It's only gotten worse in the years as generally the online populace of players has become more and more fowl.
I am a pretty darn good player in all manner of online games and if anything ruined it, it was when I actually looked into hacking and enlightened myself a bit.
BC2's lack of observer and a real kill-cam, not look at the person that shot you, only compounds the issue.
If you are interested in learning about hackers (not necessarily hacking yourself) good Hackcam and watch the video as well as do some researching on different types of hacks.
