Evening Reading
by Jeff Mattas, Feb 07, 2011 5:00pm PSTThis past weekend, I cozied up with Stacking, a curious little puzzle-based adventure game from the folks over at Double Fine. While I'm only approaching the halfway point to completion, and will reserve judgment until I've finished, the overall experience has gotten me thinking. In addition to being a game whose presentational attributes are the very definition of the word "charming," the core gameplay seems quite adept at doing something I've been hoping to see for a while: reinvent the classic adventure game.
What's so impressive is that the core attributes that make an adventure game what it is (exploration and puzzle-solving) are still there, but they're presented in new ways that really encourage experimentation. The trial-and-error methodology that seems inescapable in puzzle-driven adventures is presented in a way that's far more entertaining than traditional adventures that simply encourage players to combine everything in their inventories until something works. Stacking still requires some of this puzzle-solving experimentation, but manages to make it much less annoying than usual. In fact, it's pretty fun.
Naturally, that gets me thinking about other tried-and-true genres and gameplay mechanics that are in desperate need of makeovers. Any ideas?

What pisses me off is that almost no one recognizes how completely inaccurate this video represents the purported problem.
He is confusing "lag" with "theater mode inaccuracy." Theater mode is not a direct record of actual events, it is a recreation. The game essentially has "keyframes" saved and plays them back via the ingame engine. This takes up about 1,000x less space than if it just saved an AVI. If it DID save an AVI, then it could be a valid comparison. To make this video accurate, he would need to
1. Identify which player is hosting since if you are shooting at someone else who is NOT the host, you should theoretically be evenly matched.
2. Have each player record a video locally on each of their xboxes.
3. THEN sync up the videos and compare.
That would give you a remotely accurate representation of how "lag" is affecting the game. The method he used simply shows that theater mode does not accurately play back gameplay footage. If you recorded a singleplayer game and then played it back in the theater mode, you would notice the same "lag."
I'm not saying there isn't a problem with lag, because the host definitely has an advantage, but this video does not show that; it's showing theatre mode is not accurate and people are mistaking that for lag.
Had to post this, because it really annoys me that people don't understand the way theatre mode works and almost no one else has picked up on this in the comments of either reddit or youtube :/

I've watched this Los Colorados cover of Katy Perry's Hot and Cold more times than I've watched any other YouTube video and I still find it quite entertaining each time. (Every time I need to do an e-mail or howto referencing YouTube I use that link.)

It was actually pretty good. A little too much of a dead spot in the middle and not as firm of a spring in the analog sticks, but all in all a big improvement over the DS3. Also, the KZ3 demo was kind of fun, but the framerate seemed a bit shite. I am used to smooth framerates in the CoD games on the 360, and this wasn't as good. Looks pretty though, in the grey and brown palette sort of way.

I can't wait, Mafia is one of my favourite games of all time, I don't expect a huge free roaming kind of game, more a tight story in an open cohesive world, just like the first game. Plus the driving is a lot better, which helps.

I have forever used a microsoft trackball optical mouse d67-00011 http://www.pcloft.com/mitroppd6.html but they have gone the way of the dodo. Ebay prices for them are beyond crazy, and I refuse to pay for what maybe a used and worn out version.
Recently Logitech released http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/trackballs/devices/7365
This made my cheer until I noticed it was Wireless. I never used wireless kb's or mice for the simple fact that I never needed to.
How much of an issue is latency or interference for gaming when using wireless mice?

The first instance that usually leaps to mind is Rawls in season three, standing behind Burrell, looking over testimonies from Baltimore citizens about living conditions having improved due to Hamsterdam, wearing an expression quite far from dismissal, but another that's stuck with me is an equally brief moment from season four: the assistant principal of the school, Marcia Donnelly, who's world-weary and willing to appease meaningless test-score requirements - but, when asked to describe to an angry superintendent the effectiveness of Colvin's student rehabilitation, looks at the floor with an expression of utter defeat and says: "A tremendous achievement." That simultaneous display of honesty and resignation chews on me more than Colvin's naked incredulity.

my wife's asus ul30a laptop was giving her really spotty two-finger scrolling on the touchpad; I read that BIOS updates were fixing the issue and found a BIOS update on ASUS's website.
It apparently flashed fine according to the ASUS flashing app, but after rebooting, I got a message that the BIOS schecksum was wrong, reset the bios, and then rebooted.
since then I've been stuck in a bluescreen loop and the "windows repair" dialog isn't helping.
Any suggestions?
