I keep hearing Mass Effect getting slagged off for its binary Paragon/Renegade branching paths. While I agree that games offering more nuanced choices can be phenomenal, I'd argue that there is still room for opposing paths.
With binary options, a much more focused, cinematic story is available. In Mass Effect specifically, you're playing a character renowned throughout our corner of the universe; a hero of epic proportions known for bold, brave moves. Wether noble or cut-throat, Shepard gets the job done. Politicians are not the heroes of the story. They would be the people making the more nuanced decisions (and I'd welcome an expanded universe game dealing with that type of decision making gameplay).
It's Superman vs Batman. Captain America vs Wolverine. It's a narrative that has served us well, and as long as it's being served to us well, I'm on board.
P.S. I have a slogan for the NGP as a 'Marital Aide': NGP for when you're Not Getting P....

Role playing does not mean that you get to act whatever way you want without consequence. If you want to roleplay your character as some middle of the road guy, you'll get middle of the road choices.
The fact is that in life, I don't get the choices available to me that the most heroic or badass people get, so it only makes sense that if I am playing a character like I was making the choice myself, I would not be getting those "high level" choices available to me. And I'm fine with that because I got to play my Sheppard the way I wanted to play him.
