Kinect Helps Boost Second-Quarter for Microsoft

18
"Cameras! Cameras for everybody!" Is what we imagine Microsoft was screaming when its second-quarter FY 2011 data was compiled and released last week. For the second-straight quarter, Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Division--which houses the Xbox platform--increased its revenue versus the same period in 2009.

Though profits for the quarter were slightly down for the company overall versus last year, the company boasted a net income of $6.63 billion.

At the top of Microsoft's "Thank You" list? Its Kinect peripheral, which sold 8 million units within sixty days of launch. "We are enthusiastic about the consumer response to our holiday lineup of products, including the launch of Kinect," Microsoft CFO Peter Klein said in the released earnings report. Microsoft had originally anticipated to sell 3 million Kinect units before increasing its forecast to 5 million prior to the holiday season.

Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices division saw a 55 per cent increase in revenue versus the year-over-year fiscal growth of its second quarter.

The division made up for $3.6B of Microsoft's staggering $19.95B total revenue for the quarter, ending December 31, 2010.

you would think with the billions of dollars they make every year they could make us a OS that doesnt jump back to the OS desktop mid game all the time (might just be something my end though i guess, win 7 pro is pretty stable at least, vista was, well not too awesome on the whole lets be honest).

Generally when something jumps back to the desktop it's because a running application requested focus from the operating system. E-Mail programs and IM clients are especially bad.

yeah ive been trying to figure out what it was for a while tbh. trust me when i say ive tried a lot of reasoning and thought. but now im basically reduced to turning off programs in a vague unscientific manner when i remember (not that often) to see if it still happens, seen peeps saying its AVG/grfx drivers/sound drivers/the OS etc. could be absolutely anything. regardless i dont get paid to solve software conflicts so they (or a third party app that im using) should sort it out and not me :D

i imagine i will never be able to sort it myself, just gotta wait for some coders to pull there fingers out of there arses and fix it. its not that much of pain i guess and compared to the bugs and bluescreens ive had from 3.1 to vista, i can live with it i guess.

lol, all ive been able to find more recently is below, if anyone else is getting the same probs on win 7 pro.

Why do you have all that running....especially AVG. Just install Microsoft Security Essentials you don't need ad-aware, avg, or commodo that would probably help a lot.

plus i have 12 gigs of ddr3 @1600, the only thing thats not running at solid 60fps is gta4 and the add-ons and we all know why that is sadly. i dont think i have to worry about freeing up ram or anything at this juncture tbh.

yeah ive been using it for half a decade and its never given me any problems that i can remember, beats using a ms firewall/malware prog that doesnt actually stop anything from getting on to your pc :P. or at least avg is fine for me and i cant be arsed to change it really since i have had nothing but problems with every other antivir ive used tbh.

MSE actually catches quite a bit and most systems i see when they are infected have avg on them. Hey if it works for you that's great I've just seen it mess up more computers and get infected more then anything else.

it was a lot more stable than any of the other microsoft os's i had used up until that point to be fair, just sucked losing 50% of your ram when you turned on your pc which is why i ended up upgrading it when i got my new rig.
