This Week on GOG: Space Rangers 2 & Return to Zork

9
Digital distributor Good Old Games has added another pair of vintage video games to its virtual catalogue this week, namely the FMV-tastic adventure game Return to Zork and the genre-spanning Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators.

Infocom's 1993 release Return to Zork will cost you $5.99 and just think--due to the magic of digital distribution, you won't have to scrimp and save for a CD-ROM drive to play! Though your 14,400bps modem might take a while to download it. A big bundle of earlier, text-driven Zork games hit GOG earlier this month, also for $5.99.

Elemental's 2006 sci-fi sim-strategy-shooter-RPG Space Rangers 2, meanwhile, is priced at $9.99. That extra $4 is for the privilege of not having to watch hammy acting.

      Why was it? (Just curious).

Is this version free of StarForce (is that what it was called back in the day) copy protection?

really genre spanning your missions often have you doing crazy things like a full blown RTS, text adventure, etc

living world. theres other AI dudes doing what you do...pirating, trading, policing, etc. its really cool to see them milling about with their own agendas and interacting with them

at least thats what i remember being pretty unique. otherwise its still a great elite/privateer/freelancer-ish open trading/mission/mining game on top of it all

The game is a mix of RPG, space sim, economy sim and RTS. With bits of arcade and text adventure (the last point is one of my favorites, they are from puzzles to math games to tycoon maagement games to choose-your-own-adventure stories). It does have the best dynamic world ever done. Conflicts between races, wars being fought in real time by AI, economic system, trade, police, piracy, technology curve, etc.

So you can trade, fight, steal, smuggle drugs, raid caravans, run away from the police, do missions for the goverments, upgrade your ship, ally with competitors against a bigger menace, be a pirate, donate money to different agencies to influence in certain areas, etc. All that in a true dynamic word, this isn't GTA where if you turn fast you see the cars reappear from thin air, or Far Cry 2 where the world is mostly empty without civs or factions. So the game is a open sandbox... but it also does have a definite enemy which you have to win to finish the game. How to do it and when it's your choice.

Agreed, this is a super game, and it's hard to explain why. It's just charming on so many levels.

This is a great way of putting it. There's nothing in it that I haven't done before, but all together in this game makes it really fun and worth it. Also, the music is really good.
