Evening Reading
by Garnett Lee, Feb 01, 2011 5:00pm PSTOver the weekend I started up a new game of Halo: Reach for a solo run. A post I read somewhere recently--I think in chatty but can't recall for sure--got me thinking. In it, the author proposed that compared to Call of Duty, Halo puts some players off because it requires more hits, and hence more skill, to get a kill. After a couple days of playing with this in mind I can see the argument. Getting into good tactical situations to win firefights takes some thought. I always know when I've gotten a kill, and likewise, almost always know when and from where I've been tagged when I go down.
I'm curious to see how I'll feel as I get later in the game. I played Reach co-op originally, so taking it on solo also brings a different perspective. But Cinematic as it may be, the chaos of Call of Duty seems to me like it would be every bit as potentially off-putting as any perceived difficulty in Halo.
Meanwhile, back at the Shack, here's today's video game news:

I played through Hydrophobiae a few weeks ago. It's got a lot of cool ideas but really ended up pissing me off in the end.
The cool stuff:
-Water effect is neat
-Physics and environmental manipulation is fun
-You're little datapad/scanner is pretty awesome, wish it was used for more though.
-The gunplay is fun, especially when mixed with the environmental stuff.
Now, the irritating stuff didn't come in 'til later for the most part.
-Framerate is all over the place, expect lots of chop
-Voice acting is pretty cringe worthy
-Super, super short, I finished it in a day and a half, on hard difficulty, and finding almost every collectible save a few.
-Ending is complete bullshit. It literally ends in mid action, no resolution at all. It's like someone pulled the plug right before the ending.
-Enemies are all the same. Seriously, one model, maybe two.
-The coolest power in the game, that of water manipulation, is not in the game at all. It's only in the "challenge rooms"
-There's a bug in the game currently where at least one medal is not attainable. Something doesn't trigger or something. This also screws up at least one achievement.
My opinion is that the game is fun, and probably worth it on sale. Just don't expect a very long experience or a complete story, and expect the "end" to piss you off.

For some reason the other night I was reminded of this game action rooommate and I used to play on the family's Apple IIGS - The Immortal.

This game was awesome. At the time (I would have been about 13 or so) it seemed really dark and super-mysterious, but fucking hell it was hard. In fact I'm fairly certain we never beat it, but it just reminds me of being young and totally enthralled by this other world and the things you can do there. Anyone remember this game? Play it?
As a side question, who else was an Apple IIGS owner back in the day? Thing was badass, right? We had the "Woz" edition (not that it really meant anything) and it was mostly used for games. In addition to The Immortal, I remember we also played a lot of Defender of the Crown and Silpheed. I also used the fuck outta that thing for Paint Shop (I think that's what it was called). We never owned another Apple but I have fond memories of that thing.

I'm not quite sure how one would successfully cram this interface into a console controller, but I salute whoever had to try.

http://gamasutra.com/view/news/32784/EA_Old_Republic_MMO_To_Show_Profit_With_500000_Subscribers.php
Here's SW:TOR's target for profitability: "At half a million subscribers, the game is substantially profitable, but it's not the kind of thing we would write home about," EA CFO Scott Brown said in a Gamasutra-attended conference call accompanying EA's third quarter fiscal earnings report today. "Anything north of a million subscribers, it's a very profitable business."
Another EA CFO Scott Brown quote on SW:TOR from back in May: ""It is the largest R&D project EA has ever undertaken in terms of total dollars that we expect to spend bringing the title to market." And now? "There's been a fair amount of talk on various blogs describing spends that are vastly higher than anything we've ever put in place." So... what changed? Oh, right, EA_Louse.
And there was the theme of "fewer, better, bigger" apparently repeated over and over again: http://gamasutra.com/view/news/32510/EA_Talks_Fewer_Better_Bigger_Titles_NFL_Strike_Ramifications.php
Where have I heard that before? Oh, right: Midway, December 2007: http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/50538 . Not to say that EA's in a situation like that of Midway, but it's scary to adopt an almost verbatim strategy of a company that went bankrupt 14 months later.
god damn.
Props to Marketing. For some reason these interviews are making me want a 3DS more and more.

It's funny how close the requirements are to what Crysis 1 demanded. It's probably intentional as well. But most prominent in that minimum requirements list: "Internet connection". That pretty much means there's going to be some form of activation DRM or persistently connecting DRM. No announcements have been made on what hoops customers are expected to jump through, but we'll find out soon, and I'm guessing it's something like "EA.com login required", as that's been the trend with games like Dragon Age 2, Medal of Honor, Bad Company 2, etc.
Looks like I am home for the day.

Giant Communist Robots [Ticker: GCR] is now 5 strong (MercFox1, Hemtroll, Kelbane, Limpossible, and Sasquatchxing), so I'll be looking into some corporation mining and combat ops in the future. We really need to go on an expedition of the Alpha islands and jump some of those roaming NPC patrols with the good gear.
Hemtroll also recieved a recruit code from Avatar Creations, so bug him and he'll be happy to set you up. More info forthcoming.
