Next PS3 Firmware Update May Add Cloud Saves

7
Sony may be adding cloud saving to its next firmware update for the PlayStation 3. Kotaku reports that firmware version 3.60 will add "Online Saving," allowing users to save their games on the cloud and access the saves from a different console.

Since the feature "will allow save data with the copy prohibited attribute to be copied into the online storage," developers are allowed to opt out if they have concerns about users exploiting it.

The catch? Online Saving will be for PlayStation Plus users only. Sony seems to be looking for ways to add value to the service, and this would fit the bill. Sources of our own Xav de Matos noted that cloud-saving was in the works post-PlayStation Plus release when he uncovered all the details prior to E3 2010. Now it looks like the cloud may finally be set for release.

The company has been more keen on bringing PC-like attributes to the PS3, like allowing Steamworks in its version of Portal 2. At the recent NGP event, Hideo Kojima hinted that he'd like to offer Cloud functionality between the console and portable versions of his next Metal Gear Solid game. Sony owns the trademark for "PS Cloud," so all the pieces seem to be in place.

Also included in the patch? Another set of ineffective security measures.
