'Play Coins' Bribe 3DS Players to Game on the Go

By Jeff Mattas, Jan 28, 2011 1:00pm PST Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime recently revealed the motivation behind the 3DS's "Play Coins," a virtual currency awarded to players when activity is measured by the device's "Activity Log" and built-in pedometer. (via Joystiq)

In an interview with MTV Multiplayer, Reggie explained that the ability to earn "Play Coins" is meant to encourage 3DS players to game while on the move, "Because we want them to be carrying their Nintendo 3DS, going through StreetPass, SpotPass types of activity."

Once earned, "Play Coins" will allow users to "purchase" unlockable content within games that support the new reward system.

It's an interesting idea, but whether or not the types of virtual incentives players will be able to unlock are enough to encourage them to make the 3DS part of their daily, real-world loadout remains to be seen.
