[Update 01-31-11: EA contacted us with a correction that a Mac version of Darkspore is not currently in the works.]

A new Darkspore trailer about the hero editor feature of Maxis' squad-based action-RPG has also casually revealed its release date: March 29. It'll be hitting PC and Mac.

While loot (or 'parts,' to use the Darkspore terminology) is naturally the foundation of the action-RPG's customisation, there are also cosmetic options. The legacy of Spore is clear in the way players can customise heroes' appearances, but unfortunately this is limited to their parts and skin rather than their actual body. On the bright side, you are able to mix the stats of one part with the look of another. Huzzah!

Darkspore was initially slated to launch in February this year, when announced in July 2010. For more on the game, check out our preview of an early version.

It's a Spore game, it's an EA game, so what evil DRM will it have on the PC and Mac? And/or will it require an EA.com login?

Those questions to be answered sometime in March, by whoever purchases the game.

I suspect EA is working on a DNA-based authentication system. You'll have to purchase a DNA scanner to add to your system. To initiate the login process you will be required to submit a blood sample. The scanner driver will be embedded in a rootkit file for security reasons. If at anytime while playing the game you remove the source of the blood sample it deletes your hard drive. If you lose your internet connection it wipes the game and you have to reinstall. You're only allowed 3 install activations. An activation requires 2 government issues sources of identification. You cannot use your drivers license as a source of identification. Failure to authenticate your identity will alert the newly formed EA license enforcement unit. Don't worry, they don't knock, and you won't hear them coming.

Dang, I woke up in a mood this morning. :)

I would expect the same type of DRM they have used for a while now, a release date check followed by a one-time online activation, and to play on-line you need to log in to your EA account (see most recently Dead Space 2, Need For Speed Hot Pursuit)
