Morning Discussion

Vacation's over. I really enjoyed my time away from work, exploring some of the great spots buried within Chicago. It was a hectic time in the city due to the face-off between the Bears and the Pack. It didn't turn out well for Bears fans.

What did turn out well was Never Not Funny, live at the Congress Theater. The show was hilarious as usual, Daver sang the theme and the crew sang along at the end. As an added bonus, I had the pleasure of meeting the crew. What a classy group of gentlemen.

Well, it's back to work for me. Next time I'll be sure to remember to take more than two days off. Maybe.

    MD Magicka Thread (Updated)

The game is $9,99/€9,99 with a demo on Steam, which has local co-op. We need to get some Shackgroups going later.

3 hours left! Purchase before the 31st of January and get the "Wizard's Survival Kit" DLC for free.

Its an action RPG (similar to Gauntlet since there is no phat loot and no leveling) where you play a wizard. The fun thing is there are no classes and instead you combine spells, for example fire and water makes you throw steam. The story seems to have some humor in it as its parodying other generic fantasy games.
It also has 4 player co-op and will be priced at $9,99/€9,99.
The game seems to be mainly designed for coop since the friendly fire of the spells results in a lot of chaos.

Bigtime shield boost tip: Rapidly cast a rings of heal mines inside a shield to charge it faster and "overheal" it; same applies with shield in an arc in front of you.

Penned behind a lot of archers? Create a 2nd forward arc shield behind yourself, overheal it, and use lightning / arcane to reflect a beam around your other shield into the annoying archers. :D

          January 25, 2011 3:11 PM

Really? it's not hard at all, you have to go in the up/down/left/right direction first, then in the direction toward the element you want to choose. It gets faster the more you get used to it.

It is a bit clumsy at first but nothing you can't learn pretty quickly. I prefer the keyboard overall, but I want to know the gamepad more so that I can play with friends should they come over.

You have to click the right stick, right? So you're going up/down/l/r with a clicked stick? Maybe my stick is in poor condition, but it was not doing it consistently. Also, you have to be really precise with your unclicking to ensure you get the right one in the list.

The d pad would be a lot more specific, I think.

maybe it's my specific 360 controller, but it is pretty much impossible to do quickly for larger spells.

            • reply
              January 25, 2011 4:55 PM

You never have to click the stick. You move it in one cardinal direction and then in another cardinal direction.

It's really fast, you basically make different L-shaped movements with the stick, when it returns to center, it's selected the element.

yeah, i dont mind it. it would be totally learnable. it was just kind of staggering the sheer amount of things you can do. i mean you have 8 spells that can be combined and then you have all these different modes and then you can swing the sword and so on. i think ive gotten spoiled from all these simplistic console ports lately and something like this makes my brain bleed. but its a good pain, a pain that burns like a forge and creates beautiful trinkets of fun.

played the demo. was fun, but seemed super easy. there's apparently no limit to summoning other than move speed, so, if you're serious about winning, you can just summon stone two or three times and blow up everything instantly. Will probably still buy it anyway just for the fun style. It was worth $10 just to mess around with lightning shields and giant showballs.

I think that enemies later one will have elemental resistances/weaknesses as well since the guy hinted at it saying some spells work better against some enemies vs others, which can make it hard if there's a mix of enemies with different resistances.

i cheese it by popping up a dome shield to cut the enemies numbers into a manageable fraction then drop bombs outside the shield from within, then make a directional shield, cast rain and arcane lightning the rest from the edge of the shield. kind of slow going though when there are archers. :(

I don't understand why they make it so you have to cast something 5 times for the strongest version. It doesn't take any longer to charge up, so why would you want anything less than the "strongest power" spell?

For one thing, the more you stack a spell, the slower you move, which means you can't dodge, and that means you get shot up by archers. Getting knocked down by archers can also reset your spell stack, so that makes it a problem.

I'm really curious why you think the controls are so bad and think it's better with a gamepad. There are 8 keyboard keys to push, all located in a cluster. On a gamepad, doesn't it require two inputs PER element? left-up, left-down, etc? How is that better than a single keypress on the keyboard?

Do you touch type? Serious question -- I'm wondering whether the reason I like the controls and you don't is because you aren't already comfortable with pressing those 8 keys from the home position without thinking about it.

it's easier to remember 4 directions than to memorize which key is what out of 8 on the keyboard. plus it shows the icons over the character rather than the bottom left of the screen (taking your eyes off the action). plus there's a combination of shift and 2 different mouse buttons. triggers feel more comfortable. i found it easier to run around and bring up spells at the same time too since i don't have to click to move. it's far from perfect but it feels a bit more manageable.

I have tried both and I really like the gamepad. I think the way you cast spells is more natural on the pad (right trigger for shoot, left trigger for explosion.) Things like shift-clicking feel awkward to me. And middle mouse button to cast on myself is really awkward.

The only thing I would change if it were possible would be to have a row of 8 buttons instead of the gesture system, but I don't mind it that much.

Nox is more like Diablo. This has essentially no loot system and you have to use a combination of keys (qwer, asdf) to cast different spells.

I used to play Little Fighter in local multi, and we would daisy chain four keyboards so that we could each have our own keyboard. You just had to set up everyone's controls to be on a different part of the keyboard.

Haha how wrong you are! This was in high school in the computer lab, where we would play on a huge like 90" projector. And because it was a computer lab, it was trivial to grab four iMac keyboards (which all have USB ports on them!)

We also one time wanted to find out how many keyboards you could daisy chain together and still have the input work:

This game is pretty great, I've noticed two issues that bugged me though. Neither of these existed in the demo.

      A) For some reason, I see "restricted symbols" (R) in the text sometimes. I think it's when a different character is supposed to be displayed, but I don't know what character it is. I can still read the text but it's strange and obviously a bug.
      B) In some areas, screen scrolling is hitchy. It's very annoying and didn't happen at all in the demo.

Those things said, I played a little this morning and have been enjoying the shit out of the game. I'd like those issues to be cleared up, but they're not ruining the game for me or anything.

The only other thing is that it's hard to aim the projectile spells with the gamepad, If they showed some kind of line indicating what direction the projectile will go, that would help. That said, given the carnage in the game, maybe it makes sense to have some question about whether you've aimed properly.

I haven't tried windowed mode, I'll do that when I get home. I did try reducing my resolution to 1280x720 and it seemed to help a little but I decided it didn't help enough given the lowered visuals at that res so I put it back.

I'll send both of these to the devs and after I test the windowed mode, I'll update them about that too.

yeah, except that it didn't. the web installer failed because of a lack of .NET 4 framework, and the version included is 3.5 which is already installed so that just fires off in silent mode and does nothing. Meanwhile the XNA installer I need to dig around into my registry, make sure that a single %Apps% location is set to a proper directory. I've already got the latest .Net 4 installed so I should have had that problem with the dxweb installer to begin with.

With nVidia, every game is potentially in 3d. It's done at the driver level, which means that some games work very well, but others don't work at all. It all depends on what rendering system and tricks the game uses.
