It looks like last year's unofficial live action short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth (you can watch it below if you haven't before) is going to pay off for director Kevin Tancharoen. According to the Hollywood Reporter, he's now going to be making a whole series of short Mortal Kombat videos for publisher Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment this spring in advance of the next game in the series. The videos, which will be digitally distributed, will give detailed biographies of some of the legendary fighters in the game.

Judging from the pilot video, expect the upcoming shorts to be pretty intense and reflect the return to Mature-rated fatalities coming in the new Mortal Kombat game being developed by NetherRealm Studios. It's also something of a departure for Tancharoen, who most notably directed the 2009 remake of Fame. His choreography experience, though, should payoff in creating the fight sequences for the upcoming shorts. Mortal Kombat is due out on April 19 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Sweet, hope that this will be good. And I don't mean Coppola good but MK good.

I just hope it keeps the magical/mystical origins of the characters & mythos, not that gritty-über realistic abomination that was the short.
