DC Universe Online Shows Strong Early Sales [Updated]

[Update: 11:14] Smedley clarified to Joystiq that the PS3/PC comparison is based on retail sales. If the Steam sales are taken into account, it tips the scales in the PC's favor.

Despite a mixed critical reception, Sony Online Entertainment says DC Universe Online is selling very well. A series of tweets from division president John Smedley says it's SOE's fastest-selling game, and hit #1 on Steam last week.

Though MMOs are usually a strictly-PC affair, SOE's focus on the console version has apparently paid off. Smedley revealed that the sales split is 52/48 in favor of the PlayStation 3 version.

The DC license has to be partially credited with the game's strong sales, but offering an MMO to more platforms and a focus on a faster combat pace surely played a role as well. We'll have our own coverage of DCUO coming soon, so keep an eye out.

Listen to Jeff Gerstmann's take on it at 10 minutes in on the 1/18 Bombcast. He didn't sound too pleased with it.

He also mentioned that it felt like a PC game stuffed onto to the PS3, except you can't use the mouse (despite the PS3 supporting one), even though you can use a keyboard. And there was a case where the mouse pointer would appear for an instant, and then disappear; they made a few jokes about that.

Funny how I feel like its a PS3 version stuffed onto the PC. Laughable how they weren't able to release a solid game on either platform and it really does point to them shifting the design a year or two ago.

The UI needs some serious work, especially the communication/social parts, but the gameplay is fun stuff.

True, chat and social interaction are poor but like every new mmo this to needs bug fixes and stuff changed but the basis is quite good. It's fun.

This is essentially how I feel about it as well. The core game is a lot of fun, and the only MMO I've even enjoyed at all since quitting WoW a couple of years ago, but the UI feels clunky and annoying. On the other hand, virtually every MMO has a clunky and annoying UI, including what WoW used to have. So, it should either be modifiable, or at least should show tooltips for keybindings or something to make it easier to get around. Or if it already does... I've somehow missed them.
