Morning Discussion

I'm still catching up on my Inter-reading, and beginning to suspect that people are in fact writing new things all the time, so here's another wodge of links for you this rainy/snowy/dry/damp/wet/hot/cold/sleety/arid/scorching Friday/Saturday.

A collection of Czech and Polish posters for Godzilla and other Japanese monster movies. They're very stylish and cool, though 'Son of Godzilla' is curiously unsettling.

Branding blog Brand New takes a look at THQ's new logo and concludes that while there are a few problems, "it is a bold improvement over the previous one."

A video trip down the London sewers, complete with gawping at fatbergs and sniffing out how posh an area is. Pleasant lunchtime viewing.

Telephones ruin society, Wondermark discovered. Not your 'iPouch' or whatever it is you crazy kids gush over, but those old wired telephones (you don't believe me but these genuinely did exist). Back in 1889. It's been downhill since then, we can all agree.

      Shadowdane's Server -- Reset Tonight

Alright with the BiomeTerrainMod becoming dead and no longer working with Beta, I've decided to go back to Vanilla and reset the server. I know a few of you have some large projects on the server, I'm going to put a .zip online so people can download it if they want. Half the fun with the Biome mod was exploring and that is basically gone, with the mod being discontinued.

I'll make a post in ER tonight when I have the server online with the new world..

He beauty about Borderlands is the zone structure that works, IMO, better than Towny. Your don't have all the fluff like Towny, but the zones you can set up and add rules gives you some really nice flexibility. You also get popup warnings when people move in and out of zones. I really like this plugin. It's what I want to use to protect the Maze.

does it need a reasonable (if any) graphics card?

i imagine my processor and ram will be more than enough. im considering leaving the 2 GC options and getting one later on.

the mobo has Integrated ATI Radeonâ„¢ HD 4250 GPU. if that is enough i will leave any reasonable graphics card for now (its a mini PC so limited options) but the best option they give is a1GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GT430 (which i was tld sucks and should get a different one, which i probably will in a couple of months)

              http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Coal_(Item)#Charcoal

Charcoal was an addition to Minecraft in version Beta 1.2. Using Wood in a furnace creates Charcoal, which has the same uses as Coal, including making torches, and smelting objects. This will undoubtedly make it easier to survive your first night as you only need two wood to make charcoal (one for fuel and one for the actual smelting). Charcoal does not stack with Coal.

I think using charcoal as a substitute would probably be quite tedious, since you only get one per wood block and you have to cook it too. I mainly see it being useful for surviving first nights when there's no visible coal.

Sure, but you have to chop down a dozen trees to get that many.

Yeah, so? I'm not seeing the problem. Coal is effectively infinite if you have anyone doing any mining.

I don't know what video game you guys are playing where finding coal requires luck. A lot of people don't even take the time to mine the stuff when they find it because their inventories already runneth over with coal.

you can do this from the comfort of your own home and tree farm. why mine AT ALL? i'm literally not going to mine any more in new singleplayer games, except maybe to get some redstone for a compass. i'll just make everything out of wood which is easier to get than stone anyway

"Six pieces of Charcoal can be obtained from seven wood blocks by breaking one of them up into planks. Each plank smelts 1.5 items, four planks smelts 6. Seven wooden blocks would smelt 10.5 items normally, or 42 items if broken into planks, but the six charcoal you can produce will smelt 48. This is a six block increase from seven wood blocks, although it requires waiting for the six logs to become charcoal. "

i probably won't bother using charcoal rather than just wood planks for cooking if that's the case. only a factor of 2 difference plus the annoyance of having to cook the charcoal first

Sounds like he designed it correctly, then. It's not supposed to replace coal or wood, but it will be useful in certain circumstances.

Yeah, is it really more efficient than just using wood?

This is just so you can start the game, chop down a tree, and make torches without having to look for coal. Right?

it seems kinda bizarre that this is intended for use at the beginning of the game. who makes a furnace before finding their first coal?

yeah it's kinda crazy. not much reason to mine when everything you'd need is on the surface. a little iron to make some buckets and a little redstone to make a compass is all you'd need to mine for

Sometimes you run around for a while and just don't see any visible coal, in which case you could easily build a furnace instead with a handful of stone.

i already use wood planks exclusively for smelting so that wouldn't change anything for me

This partially corrects the issue that previously that one log gave you as many smelts as one plank, where as breaking a plank into sticks gave you less smelts that the planks. Now, if you turn the log in charcoal you get more smelts from the log than if you turn it into planks.

So previously, breaking a log to planks gave you higher smelting efficiency, but breaking the planks to sticks lowered the efficiency (but is still better than the original log).
Now Logs turned into charcoal is the most efficient, and each stage of breaking down the log loses efficiency.
