by Garnett Lee, Jan 12, 2011 5:00pm PSTI played Uncharted 2 as one of my catch-up-over-the-holidays games and finished it off the other night. After such a fun adventure--one of the best I've played--the last few combat encounters and then the boss fight felt like a tremendous punch to the gut. Someone on Twitter asked if I was suggesting that there shouldn't be boss fights at the end of games. Hell yes I am.
Boss fights grew as a logical extension of the control mechanic-heavy nature of video games in earlier generations. Since then, the content in and way we play games has dramatically evolved. In many games, like Uncharted 2, they no longer feel like an epic showcase and payoff for all the skills mastered in the game. Instead, they become a distracting--or often worse yet, annoying--anachronism. Sure, at the end of God of War III I wanted--nay, needed--a massive boss fight. But at the end of Uncharted 2, all I could think while running the patterns to beat that boss was "God, I wish this would end," and that's not the last feeling such a great game should leave.

frustrating in that, you really don't know what you can and can't block and dodge during boss battles. when you go in cold, you might try to block an attack and get hammered, yet a different attack by the same boss, or a similar one later on, will be blockable. this has been an issue since god of war 1. i remember the minotaur fight - no idea you could block his attacks until i randomly tried it. because other attacks, you can't!
but it's also so satisfying when you finally bring a boss to his knees and you get that O symbol which generally means, you're going to beat the shit out of something. crush skulls, break bones, rip off limbs. something like that. i actually yelled "yeah you mother fucker" when i killed this latest boss.

After failed attempts at getting the situation resolved myself, the Shack comes to the rescue again! I now have a valid GFWL account and can resume enjoying (and bitching about) my games again. Major-League props to malloc for helping get me issues forwarded to the top men at LIVE support. I almost refused malloc's SM help offer after banned Shackers from StooFoo nearly stolt my account with fake help offers through SM.
Unless things change for the better in the future, I would recommend keeping separate accounts for your GFW and Xbox Live profiles. I know I said I would never buy another GFWL title after this shit, but Bulletstorm sure looks like fun.

I've done a fucking stupid thing. And I knew it was stupid as I was doing it, and went ahead anyway, like an idiot. Nod32
Anyway, now I have a couple of dodgy files running from user\appdata\roaming and roaming\boot. Neither file is showing up in windows explorer (\boot doesnt show up at all, and when I type it in, it shows as blank).
Show hidden files and folders is turned on, I think I have as much rights as I can have, and I can't see the offending files. How do I see them so that I can kill them?

My current system is an E8400 Core2 with an ATI Radeon 4800 (512MB)
I'm considering a new SandyBridge i2500k running on an H67 board. The machine will mainly used for coding and image processing. What say you, is that GPU on the i2500 generally going to be faster than the 4800 or is it a mistake not to get a dedicated GPU? (For Photoshop acceleration, or if i decide to fire up a game now and again)

Partway through first segment
Just watched Believe, The Eddie Izzard Story. While the production and editing was quite low for a higher profile documentary, his life story was fascinating to see for someone that already loved his performances on stage and screen.
Had no idea he came up through street performance and binded escapism, failed college attempts, touching struggles with his mom's death, but more importantly, I had no idea that he was pushed out of comedy almost entirely by sensationalist English TV and some fucking losers over there upset that he did mixed sets. The fact that the government even got involved at all was preposterous.
I can't imagine the BBB or the feds going after Louis CK for fraud because he did a set in another freaking country that shared identical bits to his return tour set.
Surprising the marathon angle was barely covered, 43 marathons in 51 days with only a few weeks training, all for charity... and now he's moving on to Triathalons. The man is amazingly well rounded and constantly pushing himself despite clearly being vulnerable to critics and the public's adoration.
