World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Sells 4.7 Million Copies in First Month, Breaking Another Record

29
After World of Warcraft: Cataclysm was declared "the fastest-selling PC game of all time" by publisher Blizzard Entertainment in December 2010, it was clearly only a matter of time before a new staggering boast was issued.

Blizzard takes the lead this time, announcing today that the MMORPG expansion pack has now set "a new record for monthly PC-game sales," selling-through a grand 4.7 million copies since launching on December 9.

The figure is "based on internal company records and reports from key distribution partners," Blizzard explains, and includes digital distribution. 3.3 million of those copies were sold on launch day alone, earning Cataclysm that 'fastest-selling' record.

"We've been floored by the community's response so far," said Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime, "and we'd like to thank them for their continued passion and support for World of Warcraft, and for helping Cataclysm reach this incredible milestone."

World of Warcraft has over twelve million active "subscribers," though Blizzard's definition of the term is not limited to those paying a monthly fee, as one might expect.

I just canceled my account. After I hit 85 I didn't have any motivation to do anything else in the game :(

I didn't even make it that far. My subs ran out a few weeks before launch and I couldn't afford to renew them. Made use of the 10 day trial to log back in and check out the new changes (Blizz once again capping the ability to level up in the trial) but I can't say it inspired me to consider renewing my subs. Especially since I've gone back to LOTRO and am really enjoying that now.

Well, it's a typical PvE MMORPG game, so once you run out of original content, there isn't much you can actually do in this game... You can continue doing repeatable, static content (heroics, BG's, arenas, PvP areas) for yet another piece of gear with "+ability" stats, but not everyone are into such things.

Leveling alts and running through 5-man instances is always fun imho.

I cancelled to, shortest amount of time it took me after an expansion. It's a weird thing, they clearly improved every single aspect of the game but every single improvement has somehow taken all the magic out of it. I think the new on-the-rails amusement park style questing rather than hubs with choices was a big part of it.
