I have a general rule I go by when first starting a game that essentially goes: As long as I haven't been givin a weapon yet, I'm in the clear as far as being attacked by something.
This way I can pretty much just stay relaxed and take in stride what the game has to offer until I begin to get in the heat of things.
So, anyways, this leads me to Dead Space.
Minor spoiler from the beginning of the game ahead.
I start the game up and I find myself enjoying the little banter between the crew as we prepare to embark on visiting the research vessel, and then moments later when we first start investigating the vessel and I'm asked to go around and check the computer screen for something. I'm just sort of taking in the atmosphere of the game at that moment. I press a switch or something and the usual "all hell breaks loose" scene is triggered which is standard in all these games. The crew bolts for it while shouting at me to find safety.
Im still sort of lounged back in my chair at this time, giving my inventory screen the once-over. I think to myself, "Well, I guess I should get moving." I close out my inventory and I casually turn to my right, and standing right in front me, staring me right dead in the face is some sort of ugly-ass alien creature.
I'm so startled that I find myself frozen for a second. The creature then sorta karate chops me with its sword arm and I let out a big "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-"
I panic, which screws up my controls, causing me to sort of bounce around the walls of the place before finally getting to safety in an elevator.
My nerves settle down and I laugh at myself as I realize the game just got one over on me.
Anyways, looking forward to getting back to this one.
Just need a new chair now after squirting a hole through my old one. :]

According to a friend I stopped playing right before the Obelisk / whatchathingy reveal. When he gave me the lowdown I was kinda glad I did.
