Morning Discussion
by Alice O'Connor, Jan 04, 2011 5:00am PSTOh, hello there. I didn't hear you knock, Internet. Sit, sit. I've been on holiday since Crimble, getting high on life and a mysterious elixir I found in a bucket round the back of Tesco in Tooting. Tingly! Now, it's back down the video games mine to pry gleaming chunks of glee from the gameface for your delight, education and amusement.
Is geek culture mainstream and what does that mean for geeks? A chap by the name of Patton Oswalt has written for Wired that geek culture must be destroyed to save it. I might suggest that what he seeks still exists, unknown to him, and would argue that geek culture must be destroyed to save us all but I'm like that. Still, I found it an interesting read, especially as I had only known Oswalt for 'King of Queens.'
I'm home, you wonderful little darlings.

Precursors is a science-fiction space opera of predictable content. Guns, aliens, intergalactic terror, that sort of business. It’s a first-person shooter with a level structure that opens up perks – bonuses of various kinds – and an inventory for the putting of stuff in. It’s a linear story – the central quest arc puts one mission after the next until the game is done – but it’s an open world. Once you get past the garish tutorial level you find yourself in a bustling and rather beautiful city that is basically Mos Eisley with a hint of City 17. Okay. Pretty neat. However, the smile arrives on your face when you realise that the city isn’t the entirety of the level, and there are miles of desert outside, full of oases, bandits, robots, crashed spaceships, weird flora, random villages, and queer happenings. The smile gets bigger when you discover there are six planets, each with similar maps of various sizes.
Sounds pretty badass.

i would like to drive 1920 * 1200/1080. i plan on keeping my case, hard disk, optical drive, all peripherals. i just need a board, memory, CPU, graphics card. the guts, so to speak.
if i could build something out, maybe with the new intel architecture, for around $600 that would be great.

The new Frostbite 2.0 engine will be DirectX 10 and 11 exclusive, no DX9 path will be supported.
A DICE developer Johan Andersson has tweeted: 'Frostbite 2 is primarily developed for DX11. XP & DX9 is _not_ supported, 64-bit OS is recommended. Lots of time to upgrade if you havent!' Oh well. Windows XP is almost ten years old now, expect this more and more.
This is AWESOME news. I wish someone would take it further and wave a magic wand and say "for now on, all PC games have to use DX10 or DX11(or open GL =) and 64bit OS.
I feel like this is the year that we are gona see massive PC gaming progression, I hope I am right.
Do you guys think its time to dump DX9 and 32bit OS or is there tones of juice left in DX9 and really most engine devs are just lazy or constrained by consoles?

Currently:
2.80 ghz C2D
3GB Ram
8400 GS gforce
Barracuda 7200 500gb (space isn't an issue since stuff is saved over the network).
I'm out of the loop on vid cards and we have to stay on Windows XP. I don't think we can go NUTZ with the hardware request but id like to recommend a really hardy Bang For The Buck upgrade for hardware regarding our usage of the adobe suite.
Also my boss uses a laptop, company issue is a lenovo thinkpad and it's very troublesome and slow, so a portable recommendation for a creative director would be good too, again windows only.

Here we are, early adopters of the Nexus One, still on Android 2.2 almost a month after the Nexus S was released. This is a phone that it took them 3 months to finally release the promised car dock, and then they only sold it for about 3 months before canceling the whole phone idea, only to come out with another one in December. They knew they were going to add multitouch, but stuck us with a crappy digitizer. I hate to be jaded, but it seems like buying an expensive Nexus One or Nexus S is just a bad move on the part of any consumer. Google will come out with something moderately better (The Nexus S is barely an upgrade) 10 months down the line and completely forget about your $500 purchase.

We need at minimum 5 people to be "hosts" and we would also have to pick a game that we all have. It can be any XBOX Live capable game.
I'll repost this for a couple of days, but reply if you are interested.

Bit of a Castlevania knock off with a bit of Shatterhand (EXCEPT WITH YOUR FEET) mixed in, and apparently it's the heat. I totally missed out on it because of how late in the life of the system it came out :(
There's a complete copy on eBay for $45, but if I went for that then I'd just have to go in on the VidPro card, too: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170386078424

According to this pundit from WSJ, Viacom sold Harmonix to Columbus Nova for $49.95.
No, I'm not missing a symbol there. They sold HMX for the price of one of their games.
This, of course, makes the investment group take all the financial liability still lingering on the RB series (music licensing, unsold inventory, etc.), and looks like Viacom can therefore write all $150M off as a tax benefit.
