Morning Discussion: New Year's Eve
by Garnett Lee, Dec 31, 2010 5:00am PSTGood morning and welcome to this last day of 2010. Today also closes out our Best of 2010 Awards with the naming of the Game of the Year. It won't be much of a revelation to those who've been following along this week, but that's sort of the nature of these things. The game that takes home the top prize usually also takes the awards for any categories in which it's nominated.
That situation led to what's turned out to be a controversial decision with our awards. To open up the fields and better recognize the breadth of great games this year, I suggested we separate the console platforms. In this generation, "exclusives" are thought of in terms of whether they are on PS3 or 360, and multiplatform developed for both. So that's how the awards are broken up. As part of that, Mass Effect 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction received consideration as 360 "exclusive" games though they also appear on PC.
Some have inferred from this that PC isn't being taken seriously. This is not the case. The method of dividing up the titles merely reflects the competitive landscape of the video game industry. However, to be completely up front, it was an oversight not to include Mass Effect 2 in the PC category nominations. We have a lot of exciting games to look forward to in 2011 and regardless of what you play them on--PC, 360, PS3, Wii, DS, 3DS, PSP, iPhone, Android, or whatever--Shacknews will be in the thick of them, playing everything we can get our hands on and telling you about them.
New game releases of May 20-26
Killzone: Mercenary shoots onto Vita on September 10
Trion Worlds hit with more layoffs, Defiance team impacted
Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault defending Vita next week
Game & Wario was originally going to be pre-installed on Wii U

It also makes me feel not want to be there at all and just quit, because being blown up is so random and stressful. Was BC2 designed to be this way or are people just abusing the unlockables somehow?

Vietnam is a different story though, I frequently see NVA spawn camping the Americans on Phu Bai Valley since it's an exposed, open area while the NVA can hide inside approximately one million huts in the village. It doesn't help that one of the control points is right outside the US spawn so when the Americans start shooting out of their own spawn using tanks the NVA has to shoot back or basically surrender a third of the map. Also, helicopters are really easy to shoot down when they start spinning up because they kick up a dust storm and if you're in a tank right next to point C you can easily shoot straight into the US base and hit the helicopter which I myself have done several times.
Also, you have to account for the team balance factor, if one side is heavily outskilling the other then it easily devolves into spawn camping where no one on the good team will switch to the bad team because they only want points and don't give a shit about fair play. If BC2 scrambled teams every map like BLOPS does 99% of these issues would probably go away except for maps that are easily suited to spawn camping.
