Weekend Confirmed Episode 41: New Year's Eve Special
by Garnett Lee, Dec 31, 2010 9:00am PSTFor this New Year's Eve 2010 show--the second of our two holiday specials--Shane Bettenhausen joins Garnett, Brian, and Jeff for one final 2010 recap and then a lengthy gaze into the crystal ball to see what may lie ahead in 2011. We catch up some with what Shane's been playing with friends back home from music games like Dance Central and Rock Band to developing thumb blisters at Super Street Fighter IV ... oh, and, uh, Sonic IV. Your responses from our SModcastle live show seed the conversations in the second segment with topics like why we really want to get our hands on the Nintendo 3DS. In the second half of the show all attention turns to 2011--the games, the trends, and, of course, predictions!

Basically, they only review the biggest titles of the year, and even then they do so inconsistently. I grimaced when they first started covering games. They have made a number of factual mistakes and I often disagree with their reviews, but I do think it is a good thing that they cover games at all.
Unless I am wrong, Kirby was awarded one of the lowest scores they gave out this year.
I don't think we should give a magazine a ton of leeway just because they are not primarily games-focused, but I do hope that all the angry nerds spamming EW don't keep the magazine from covering them. It is great to have an avid fan base out there, but worry that they cannot respond to controversy such as this without throwing accusations and writing emails laced with foul language. In the end I have to wonder if these avid gamers are hurting this industry's ability to expand into other markets.
Kirby might have been an awful pick as the worst game of the year, but it does at least make sense in the context of the (few) games they reviewed this year.
Do you guys think that gamers can respond to the growth of this industry in a way that can welcome newcomers, or are we doomed to keeping this industry niche because we are so protective of it?
