Evening Reading

Last night I went to play some BF:BC2 Vietnam and the Dallas Shack server was completely empty! What is that noise? Has the hype died off or was I trying the wrong server?

Also got in some WoW and a few games of SC2 last night. I'm not doing endgame stuff or dungeons in WoW during the week so it's very conducive to quick play sessions. As for SC2, I'm try to recover my skills and work my way back up the ladder. I'm very excited about patch 1.2 on the live game because it will allow us to setup a Shacknews chatroom!

Sucks about Kick Ass if those people actually went to the theater thats probably an extra 100 million.

But that's the other problem. Every pirated copy doesn't equal an exact sale. It's like anything people can get for free. A lot of times they don't even want it. But if it's "free" they will take it.

I'm so sick of this excuse.

Yes, a pirated copy does equal an exact sale. Someone received a product without paying the creator of the product. That's theft. That's a missed sale. It doesn't matter AT ALL if they "don't want it" or if "it sucks anyway."

Please stop justifying theft by comparing it to the quality or the demand of a product.

It's only a missed sale if the pirate would have bought it otherwise. That's definitely not true in all cases.

Yep, millions of pirates all saying "fuck it, it doesn't matter if I download it. It's just one person. I don't want to spend $8 to see a movie in theaters! That's stupid!". When kids say it, I just shake my head and think "ehh, one day they'll see". When it's the adults that say it, that's when I really feel depressed about humanity.

What happens if they say it, download it, watch it, see it in theatres, download it again, buy it, jack off to it, ruin the copy, buy another copy, trade that in for a shitty discount, buy a different movie, then 2 years later buy it in a holiday bundle?

          December 21, 2010 5:20 PM

Yes because every pirate didnt see it in the cinema or would have paid to see it if they didnt pirate it.

            December 21, 2010 5:24 PM

yes, because none of the pirates that didn't see it in the cinema would have ever have paid to see it if they didn't pirate it.

I'm not saying that there's a 1:1 correlation between a pirated copy and a lost sale, but jesus christ, when you're one of the top pirated movies of the year (in the year that Avatar comes out and when you debut halfway through the year) and you're a commercial bomb, I think it's safe to say that most of your target audience was comprised of a bunch of lazy cheap fucks that doesn't understand the larger consequences to their actions.

I'm pretty sure Avatar made boatloads of money, it is far from a "commercial bomb"

                  Ahhh, ok.

I know that Kick Ass is beloved around here, but I can see how most people would think it looks pretty fucking dumb from both the name and the previews. I'll watch it eventually, but I'm not in a big hurry.

I'll definitely give it a shot, just saying it's not really surprising that it didn't make a billion dollars. I doubt piracy had all that much to do with its performance at the box office.

This is true. Had I not read the comic, I would've assumed it was a kiddie superhero movie.

I thought it looked dumb, plus it's a Nick Cage movie so that's two strikes right there. There's no fucking way I'm going to spend $20 to go watch that.

Nick Cage is a badass in this movie. It's like how Kevin Bacon was great in Death Sentence. Also Kick-Ass is ultra-brutally violent, in case that is not your cup of tea.

I thought 3D was supposed to help curb the piracy thing as you can't get the same experience at home. Oh well.

i used to think if you price it right, piracy will disappear. but then there will always be those who see free vs. any price, no matter how low, and they choose to pirate.

I saw this more than once in 3D and for what that costs, I should be entitled to steal this movie in whatever format I want for the rest of my life.
