Morning Discussion
Having posted a contemptible Bulletstorm trailer at work earlier in the day, filled with senseless flips and motherflippers, I was delighted by the restrained swearing in Trading Places. If you artlessly drool non-stop obscenities, like Bulletstorm seems to, it can quickly become tiresome. This is deeply unfortunate as swearing is excellent.
No, Trading Places held back, even stopping itself mid-cuss, until the time was just right. It's this restraint which makes, for example, this simple two-word obscenity--not be watched at work or in polite company--absolutely fantastic. You have to see it context, though. Which you should, because Trading Places is still delightful.
Conkers to Bulletstorm.

I'm hearing all this complaining about the state of the game... but I played last night on Morfus' server for several hours and I really only saw one or two strange things. For the most part it played great.
Good:
-leaves decay (a simple thing which makes me so happy)
-server-side inventory seems to work (for the most part)
-people are forced to make more tools and can't dupe (supposedly) ..tool management is important again
-visible armor and tools
-tool tips are kinda nice (especially with texture packs where I don't always know what stuff is)
-some things seem smoother (sand and gravel falls smoothly)
-combat with animals and monsters seems smooth now.. feels like single player for the most part
-few other things
Bad:
-eating food twice.. is bad (it kicks you off the server) ... eat it once then wait, it will go away eventually
-swords are strange... they break.. then come back and duplicate - then you stack them and they combine... weird stuff going on there
-game runs slow as hell on my laptop... (runs fine on my home PC)
-seems to be a bit of lag/slowness after respawn
That's about it.. I really didn't hit many issues. The game played.. for the most part.. a LOT like single player.-
-
Avg 40-50 fps with occasional dips down to 10-15 for me on an E6750 and 8800GT :/ Many torches in view really kill performance. I guess it's time to buy a new computer...
Funny thing is looking at those old performance lists people compiled back before Halloween update... my hardware should, according to those, hover around 200 fps...
-
Yep.
There are two main things causing complaints that I see.
1: Waiting for mods/plugins to be updated. Some people just can't live without certain mods, and when the mod doesn't work they complain that Notch broke something. BZZZZZZZZZ wrong, the game works fine (for the most part), it's just your mod that is broken.
2: Loading old worlds instead of starting new. I hope people don't get to attached to their worlds, because I bet at some point there will be a patch that breaks old save games and requires starting new. We already get bugs when you load old saves after a patch (leaf decay lag, etc).
There are definitely some things that need patching, but it's not quite as bad as most people make it sound. Just have to play vanilla!
I was hoping for a nice patch today, but I guess what we got is good enough for now.-
Agreed. And he has said several times that he doesn't approve of these mods which actually change his code... so he specifically said he wont be supporting this stuff until the official API is done. So people should know what's going on. Most of the complaints I hear are about mods and plugins etc... it's no wonder he doesn't approve of them. It really makes for a mess. Some of them are really nice.. but they are actually hurting the perception of his game because people who don't understand this stuff... see it as Notch breaking the game. But if you play the plain vanilla versions.. they work fairly well for the most part.
-
Let's not forget that we use the mods mostly to fix Notch's broken code:
* there is no logging of any game events with the default client, so unless you run your server like m0rfus, good luck finding and dealing with griefers;
* some mods allow quick (if inelegant) fixes for Notch's bugs. We've had leaf decay for weeks due to a hey0 plugin, whereas the vanilla people just get angry at Notch. We also had working buckets for MONTHS before Notch patched it, thanks to mods;
* simple things like /playerlist, and identifying who the mods are on the server, should be in the default game;
* There's still no fucking GAME in Minecraft. Once you're set up the game becomes markedly easier, if all you are interested in is PvE. Your two alternatives are 1) find a lawless PvP server where you're constantly under threat; 2) Install mods that offer some sort of game experience (economy mods, Towny once it gets patched a few more times, etc).-
I yeah, i totally agree. I'm not saying some of the mods aren't great and very useful. Most of it is stuff he is probably going to get to eventually... we just don't want to wait for it. That is more about us being impatient than it is notch being a poor developer. The game is still in beta... everybody knows it.

Wow. I have a Pentium D 3.2Ghz with 4Gb of RAM. This thing is 5 years old... it is not top of the line at all. The game was running fine with me. Definitely over 30fps. So something is definitely going on there. I'm not seeing most of the issues you are seeing either. Single player is perfect.. I don't really have an issue. I do see some overly dark spots due to lighting glitches.. but it's not that common and doesn't seem to effect my performance. That sucks you are having so many issues.
-
-
-
-
Ok... so on my laptop here I started a new game and it seems to be working fine. So this seems to comfirm the theory that old worlds = bad... new worlds = good. The strange thing though.. is that the world I was having slowness with was one I had barely started on. The world was only 2mb... I had started it a few weeks ago but hardly played it at all. Still.. it was running like a soggy dog with two legs.

How should armor work?
I don't think it's working correctly.
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Armor
This armor prevents part of the damage dealt to the player...
Hmm. I just hate how I die even though my armor has hardly taken any damage.
Would it be better if armor was essentially more health points? All hits take away from your armor until the armor is gone, only then does your health start going down. -

No.
He keeps breaking his game just as often as he fixes it. It's incredibly frustrating and the mod community largely has had to pick up the slack to even get his game hassle free. He needs to get his crap together and stop screwing around.
I swear if he actually WORKED on this game for a week, it would be 50% closer to finished.-

But with beta/alpha testing, you actually see development. It's always 2 steps forward, and 30 steps back.
Id rather him realease a big update with hours of Q&A testing and have to wait months for the next update instead of these shitty half-assed last minute fixes he throws out the door right before he heads home for the holidays.-
-
-
He says the longer time between updates is coming with beta.
http://notch.tumblr.com/post/2175441966/minecraft-beta-december-20-2010
There will be a bigger focus on testing and stability as well, with more time between updates.
He got off to a bad start, heh.

The only reason your servers are down is because we are waiting on the mod makers. Why are you mad at Notch? Why not get mad at Hey0, who went on vacation when he knew a patch was coming?
I wish patches were optional and they didn't break mods, oh well. Not worth stressing over. If people are giving you shit about your servers not being up then they are dumb. ;)
I think things will get better, eventually. It's a bit of a rollercoaster at the moment, sometimes things do look pretty bad.
Don't worry, be happy. :(

He's blaming Notch for rushing untested code out the door. For last-minute cramming. For apparently testing things but still releasing bugs that you can notice within 5 minutes. I understand that bugs are sometimes only evident on certain hardware configurations, but some of the stuff Notch has pushed out is not this. It's across the board.
In Notch's defence, he's been pretty on-point with the releases since about November, with about one coming out every week. But it still doesn't change the fact that every time he makes a major feature addition to the game, it's unplayable for around 2 days.-
-
-
It works like that anywhere you go right.
At School : Write a bunch of shit on paper, then hand in the "real" report 2 days later.
At Work : Put a load of crap in an email, then send the "official" email 2 days later.
At Home: Tell your wife to fuck off, 2 days later you tell here you ready to listen.

While I'm not at this stage, I guess I'm just massively disappointed. It's not that I expected a huge update with new features, but rather I expected something that was somewhat less buggy. The beta announcement promised that beta builds would focus on stability and bug fixes, and of course more testing. However, it seems like the exact opposite of that. I mean the game doesn't even run on OSX, how does that slip through?
-
I think what he needs to do is go into hiding for a bit (after he fixes the current round of game-killing bugs). Gather a small group of beta testers... go radio-silent for about a month... code like crazy every single day to work out the major bugs, clean up the code, maybe add a few new little treats... don't make any promises... just hammer away at the thing non-stop for a month while testing the releases with his beta testers (maybe with nightly builds). And when it's nice and solid and stable and the testers are good with it... take one more week to say: "Beta 2 release will be released in one week". He can spend that last week just playing the hell out of the game (DON'T ADD ANYTHING NEW) and fixing the less common bugs he might have missed. Then roll out a nice solid and tested Beta 2 release. That's what I would do in his position at least.
-
yeah he's gotten way too many apologists. Please, the guy at this point is fucking up. Accept it, you can still love the guy and all his indie charm, but he has a shitload of money now and is supposedly increasing resources yet we haven't gotten our return from it except a buggy ass game and failed updates
-
-
i can't believe people are getting this up in arms about something that up until yesterday was just in alpha. you bought an alpha, and you got an alpha, which has spent one whole day in beta.
he's still the only person working on this. the other people he's brought in are working on different projects.
your attitude is baffling, and makes you look like a petulant child that's whining.-
-
Has that happened to you or are you just repeating what someone posted?
I've beat up many trees, not once has it killed me.
Hyperbole and misinformation don't help.
YES there are many bugs, many of them stupid. The game is playable though.
Why do I get the feeling that every reply to you is making you do something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8qb9TRqZsM#t=3m40s Heh.

Let's take a step back.
Things were FUBAR last week, multiple people got sick, including Notch. Yeah, he somehow found time to try the Ludum Dare competition, but beta did come out on the day it was promised. So it had some bugs, it's a beta.
We are really spoiled, our expectations are very high. We see the potential in the game, and some of the mods out there are very good. So when things break we get disappointed.
Let's compare Minecraft to some big AAA game, with a multi-million dollar company behind it.

When Patch for PC?
Approximate Launch Date/Times
PlayStation 3: Wednesday, November 24th, 2010 - 2 AM PST
XBOX 360: Wednesday, November 24th, 2010
PC: TBD --> means to be determined
NBA 2K11 for PC is still waiting for a patch, when the consoles got patched a month ago. PC players have been having problems, yet no patch.
Maybe it's an apples-to-oranges comparison, maybe not. This retail, full priced game has been waiting for a month for a patch, yet this cheap, indie game gets patches almost every day.
Notch is amazingly responsive compared to some companies. Could it be better? Of course, but it could also be much much worse.

I think the issue is that many times when he patches, he breaks things that are obviously noticeable if you just play the game for 15 minutes, which then gives people the impression that he doesn't test anything before pushing out these mandatory updates. That makes people frustrated, and frustration leads to anger, anger leads to internet forum rage.

I did not mind the game breaking during alpha.
But this inventory bug patch and calling it beta ...
When you break a core mechanic of the game (remember when we couldnt destroy blocks)
that is alpha.
Now that it's beta I do not accept these kind of core bugs.
A beta bug is hitting a pig and not always getting bacon.
Fu notch, fu all the way. -

yup waiting on updates on pretty much everything... BiomeMod & Hey0 (plus plugins). I tried running a Vanilla Server and that won't even work. I tried to do it as a test and it blue screened my server.
I think this new tree code can't handle the Biome trees as the CPU usage jumped to 100% then got a BSOD. Previously CPU usage was only 1-10% depending on how many players were on the server.
I have a feeling we could be down for a while or have to reset, if Notch doesn't fix this shit. :( -

What I'd like is to have super scary mobs that only spawn very rarely -- like someone else was saying a while back, have a 'blood moon' every 20-30 in-game days, and on these nights, the really nasty shit spawns. Like mobs that can break walls to get to you. Huge mobs that take multiple people to take down. Fast mobs, like the hunter zombies in HL2.
That would 0wn.

I think there should be some kind of limit, just to keep things from getting too crazy.
On one of the PVP servers I was playing on, some people would go out to the 3000+ range. Virtually impossible to find them, even when they build above-ground (that was their 'reasoning' for going so far out, they wanted to build above-ground on a no rules PVP server...)
If a server had a couple hundred people on it then I can see unlimited space being good, but with 10-20 players there is way too much land, and it easily gets boring looking for people/bases.
